Black exhaust pipes

I am running a unmodified SS. Have about 4100 miles on it and both exhaust pipes are black. Is that normal?

Always thought they should be a gray if mixture is set correctly.

Mileage is a little lower than I expected.

The tune from the factory is a little rich for safety reasons, hence the carbon on the tips.

Is the safety issue about running to lean and causing damage?

It would seem to me that running rich would carbon up the heads and cause problems and also hurt gas mileage.

It's only at WOT. The car does NOT run rich just driving around.

Right, because in closed loop the O2 sensors keep things in check. But like the OP, I wonder why the tips are so black?

My car spends very little time at WOT so mine must have other issues. My other autos tail pipes were gray.

It's black envy. The pipes want to match the body IMO

Black Soot is Completely normal for our unleaded fuels.

Back in the day when we had good fuel the pipes would be gray.

Or switch to race fuel and they turn gray.

Although the tailpipes on my SS are still dark thanks to "environment friendly fuel", the amount of soot has been reduced at least 75% since I installed a catch can.

I was under the impression that the 10% mix were cleaner burning. If it leaves a black residue, don't see how that could be true. Must be one of Al's miss understandings.
