I don't think chances are high if plans are to actually compete in the market........

PROS -- For most of the Camaro's existance, it was the "Top Dog" model. It is possibly the most storied name in Camaro history, and everyone knows Z28 = Camaro.

CONS -- The first generation Z28 was a race-spec Camaro (similar to today's SSX concept), built and restricted by Trans Am guidelines.

ZL1:
PROS -- In it's day, this Central Office Production Order set of Camaros installed a 427ci big block engine called the "ZL-1" into 69 1969 Camaros. These cars undisputedly produced the most power out of all Camaros in history.

CONS -- "ZL-1" was not the name of the car. And this car was meant to be the king of the drag strip, not intended to handle well with all that weight of a big block over its nose. In addition, only 69 of these cars were ever produced...out of the millions of Camaros built and sold over the years.

I'll reserve my opinions for later...but that's how I've read the arguments...the only thing both 'sides' can agree on is this car will be completely bada$$.
It was aluminum probably weighed less than a 350, anyone have the weight for comparison?

The most powerful Camaro ever!
It should have its own name. Whatever that may be.

Don't forget the 1969 ZL1 car's 427 block was aluminum, which helped the weight issue over the front wheels. There were other COPO cars with 427 iron blocks as well.
Needless to say, the ZL1 was a very, very special car!

Best regards,

Elie

Aluminum, but still a big-block - that's what I was trying to get at. I dunno how its weight compared to iron small blocks....

The car was special, no argument there. But, imo, it was hardly special enough to oust the 'Z28' name for this new, very special car.

I wish I had some hard data at my fingertips, but my recollection is that the aluminum block/aluminum head ZL1 was very comparable in weight to the iron small block. Not sure which one was actually heavier, but it wasn't a huge difference...

As for what the car may or may not be called, knowing the passion within our community, I'm guessing that there could be controversy there... regardless of how it's badged... but hopefully there will be no controversy about what the car is, and what it's capable of, in terms of performance.

Best regards,

Elie

so, since we're on the topic? how's the weather in Chicago? I know there's been a bunch of snow, so is the city like shut down? is the Auto Show the only thing going? Raven and I will be flying in on Saturday early, so I'm trying to see if we're even going to be able to get there with all of the snow and such.

Agreed. When all's said and done...if the price is right, yours truly will snatch one up as fast as I can, even if it's called the Camaro Sssssuper Sportical.

It'll still be a rip-snorting beat with a delicate footstep worthy of much respect and admiration.

ZL1s were right around iron-headed small blocks. The block itself was right around 100 pounds if I remember correctly.

I know that we will find out in the next couple of days what the new vehicle based on the Camaro platform will be. Maybe it is just me, but the wording sounds different for it to be introducing a Z28/HPE Camaro. I might be reading into it more than I should, but it sounds like a totally different car, I have no clue what kind, but not the introduction of the Z28/HPE that we all are hoping for. I hope I am wrong.

Now - I'm thinking they'll just announce something about the new V6 fuel economy models I mean - if that's your thing, cool - but now I'm feeling like we aren't going to see what we want quite yet

Honestly - Transformers was shot in Chicago and has been upping the promotion content lately.

I think we'll see the production version of the [whatever Bumblebee would be called in real-life] movie Camaro.

...we will have the answer tomorrow morning my friend...it's kinda like Christmas Eve for us Camaro enthusiasts, is't it? Are we going to get what we want? Theres a big present all wrapped up..., all we can do is dream and speculate. The anticipation is sometimes better than the final result however. I am staying cautiously optomistic. We shall see my friend, we will know with certainty in the morning. Then we can write lotsa new threads! LOL, man I can't wait!!!..

No, I was trying to tread softly on the "calling it a Z28" territory.

I think it was closer to 125 pounds for the block, now that I think about it more... Your numbers look about right, because I remember reading it would come in right around a SB, and I'd consider within 40-some-odd pounds "about". I didn't think something like an L72 would be 700 pounds, though, lol!

Thanks Clyde. I was hoping you could set me straight
