04 SVT Cobra to 10/11 Camaro SS

I'm thinking about trading my 04 Cobra Mustang for a 10/11 Camaro SS. I love my Cobra it's quick with 460 rwhp and 460 tq, but it's a bit small and a bit dated. My favorite car has always been the 69 Camaro and I think the 10/11 SS will be as close as I come to one. I'm just wondering if I would end up regret parting with the Cobra.

What mods does it take to get these SS's into the 425-450 rwhp range?

Bolt-on's can get you close to 420, 450 will require a cam. I don't think you'll regret it.

Are you talking auto? A manual is stock @ 386 HP and with headers, exhaust, CAI and tune members have rported closer to 450 RWHP. An auto seems to be roughly 20-30Hp less.

Manual, like I said above mine dyno'd at 364 stock. I have typically seen 41x rwhp from bolt-on LS3's. There is no way to get close to 450 rwhp with just bolt-on's unless it's a very liberal dyno.

420 ish is very possible with Headers intake and tune on an LS3.

Where are you located in NC?

Headers, CAI and a good tune will pull 420-425 RWHP....tops! There is no significant power to be had from exhaust system (cat backs) mods. I got 424 RWHP with those 3 mods. The following year, I wanted more, so I added a Maggie and pulled another 150 HP.

Is your Mustang stock? If you just want more power, those motors respond very well to mods. We have Terminators running around here pushing 700 FWHP with stock internals; only increased boost and a good tune....but the Camaro is so drop-dead beautiful.

I was actually gonna look for 03/04 cobra before the Camaro came out.

IMO.... those are the baddest mustangs in the modern times.... add a pulley, tune, and boost and it was a freak!!!

Thank you for the responses thus far. It really is a hard decision for me as I love my Cobra but she is getting up there in age and miles. The Cobra is a mean piece for sure it dynoed stock near 385 and with a few inexpensive bolt on she is near 460 to the wheels. I wish the Camaro would respond to boltons like that. The obvious choice for me would be the new 5.0 but I really don't care for the looks of it especially the rear of the car. I also like the 11 SRT Challenger but it's price tag is out of reach. There is a 2011 1SS with barely 900 miles on it for sale at $31,000 what do you think of that price?

Sounds like a good price. Much better deal than the SRT8. Add a whipple and some longtubes, cai tune and drag radils and it may run 10`s..

Do it. I did. The only things you may miss are the blower whine and the lumbar support in the front seats. Everything else is better in the Camaro.

Obviously every dyno reads slightly different, but mine with 400 miles on it put down 370 to the wheels. I then added a rotofab cai and custom tune. She went right back on the dyno and made 385. The shop owner said with miles and breakin should maby gain 5 more rwhp. The car had never been punched until it was on the dyno that day. My car is also an ls3. The shop owner also told me that he has had lots of ls3's with my mods and including headers put down 420. I would say that is doable.

How much do you care about exhaust sounds? I think you have one of the best sounding cars in the world IMO. In that case, the camaro will not have that sound. But it just different. 04 Cobra is great car though. You can make that car super fast with out lots of money. But I got to say, the camaro looks great! It makes you feel fast just sitting in it!

That's debatable. I've still got my '03 Mach 1. It sounds just as good as my '03 Cobra did. Maybe it's because they are both 32V engines. I've got BBK longtubes, cat deletes and Flowmaster American Thunder mufflers on the Mach 1.

They do sound better exhaust-wise than the Camaro. I'll give you that.

Sorry about the endless questions but what is the differance between the 400hp automatic, and the 426hp manual? Is this a tuning change to reduce hp or is there a differance in the motor? Is there really a differance of 26hp on the dyno between the two?

I said it before and Ill say it again, you guys think the mustange sounds so good... put headers and no cats with 1 chamber flowmasters on your camaro and tell me what you think then! I heard a cammed camaro with this exhaust also and they sound SICK! Much better then the mustange, flowmaster is the only exhaust to make these camaros have that real old school muscle car sound! The other systems sound good but they just dont cut it.

The L99 (auto) has AFM (active fuel mgmt). They are typically putting down 330 rwhp because they are starting off with less HP and then the big Auto trans is robbing alot of the HP.

Add the bolt-ons, a tune to get rid of the torque mgmt, and a converter and it's all good. You'll be close to the same as the LS3.

Not as fun to drive IMO.....I need to shift the gears personally.

It would be tuff to give up the Cobra. I was going to get a Cobra before the Camaro came out. Eventually the Camaro will be dated as well but right now they still stand out in the crowd. I LOVE this car! but it will have it's pros vs cons with the mustang.....both of them their own pros/cons.

If you have the bank....put on the bolt-ons and add the maggie like your Cobra has. You'll see over 500 rwhp. Then you'll have to add a couple suspension mods to make it hook up but those that have that setup are running in the lower 11's.

LS3 with basic bolt-ons are in the mid-lower 12's.

BTW: Mine dynoed 378 rwhp with a muffler delete and CAI. Added headers, 3" exhaust and tune and I'm 411 and that was on a heated day in TX.

But the drone at highway speed would make your head pop!

The 32V Cobras and Mach 1's don't have the Camaro's drone.
