advantage of aluminum vs steel flywheel???

has anyone just replaced the stock steel flywheel with an aluminum one and kept the stock clutch? what is an advantage or disadvantage of doing this? im concidering doing this to drop a few LBS from the drivetrain and free up a few horses. if you have done this please post up what flywheel you went with.

The pluses are for road racing the rpms will drop less between up-shifts and the motor can rev quicker. The negatives are in a drag race application the heavier flywheel will store more energy/inertia that allows a harder launch.

Light flywheels make it a bit more difficult to leave a stop. You will need to rev it more and slip the clutch a bit more... But it is "livable"...

Not really reving it more at launch...it will just bog down a little more due to less inertia. Also the lighter flywheel will not keep your car running when loping on its own..you have to be tuned very well. But it will spin up fast for you even on the drag strip. I would not waste time doing a flywheel without doing the clutch though..jmo!

Hard to say as every car is a bit diff but with our V8's torque you'd prob need to add 500-1000rpm to get away smoothly, more if you want to leave aggressively...
