IROC REAL OR CLONE?

hey guys i am new here as i just bought a 1987 iroc on the week-end. is there anyway to verify that is a real iroc or just a z28 with the stickers on the door. the car has z28 on the dash and the side skirts and iroc on the door. the motor is a 305 4 bbl with the overdrive 4speed auto. (it is a t-roof) and has the iroc rims. but all that can be easily put on to make it look like an iroc so is there a code somewhere to verify?

thanks in advance
mike

If it's an 87 and has a 4 bbl it is not an IROC. It would have to have Tuned Port Injection unless they did a swap....which would probably not have been wise for that motor/car.

Loook at your arm rest under the console lid:

LG4 = Carb. L89 = TPI

The 305 TPI (RPO LB9) was optional on the Z28 (with and without the IROC-Z option).

1987:

1987 IROCs used two different RPO codes--"Z28", and "B4Z". Plain Z28s will have just "Z28" in the RPO codes. IROCs will have both "Z28" and "B4Z", because "B4Z" is the RPO code for the IROC package, which was added on to the "Z28" package. For 1987, No "B4Z"=no IROC.

However, if your SPID is missing, the eighth digit of the VIN may be able to tell you what you have:

IROC Engines:

F (LB9)
H (LG4)
8 (L98)

--In 1987, if your VIN shows an "8" in the 8th position, you have an IROC, because the IROC was the only model this engine was available in.

--In 1987, if your VIN shows either "F" or "H", the VIN tells you nothing about the car's status as an IROC, because these engines were also used in other models. You will need the RPO codes from the SPID.

--The RPO code to look for in 1987 is "B4Z". For this year, No "B4Z"=No IROC.

yep... look in the console for the RPO codes. for an 87 IROC, you should have both Z28 & B4Z

also, in 87, they had both Z28 & IROC badges because the IROC package was an option to add to the Z. and they didn't drop the factory carbs til 88, so you could actually have a factory motor. check the 8th digit in your VIN. if it's H, it came with the LG4 carb'd 305

THANKS GUYS, I CHECKED THE CODES UNDER THE ARM REST AND IT IS STILL THE ORIGINAL ARM REST ACCORDING TO THE VIN ON THE STICKER WITH THE RPO CODES. SO IT IS ONLY A Z28 AND NOT A IROC, BUT IT IS THE `H` MOTOR CODE SO YA A CARB 305 AND AUTO TRANS IS ORIGINAL.
WHEN I WAS LOOKING AT THE RPO UNDER THE ARM REST THERE ARE LOTS OF CODES THAT ARE NOT SHOWING ON THE LIST ANY OTHER PLACE TO LOOK TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THESE CODES MEEN? ALSO IN MY VIN THE 6TH DIGIT IS `21` AND ALL I CAN FIND FOR THAT DIGIT IS `87`MEENING COUPE 2DR SPORT. THE CAR IS A T-ROOF SO MAYBE IT MEENS THAT BUT ???

The internet is your friend. Embrace it.

Now, post some pictures of your car! I love IROCs.

THANKS, THAT IS THE SAME LIST I HAVE FOUND ON THE NET ON A NOTHER SITE AND IT IS ALSO THE SAME LIST AS I HAVE IN ONE OF MY CAMARO BOOKS. I HAVE 54 MORE CODES THAT ARE NOT ON THESE LISTS, THERE WAS ONLY 22 THAT MADE THE LIST. I WAS JUST WONDERING ABOUT THE REST BUT THEY ARE PROBABLY NOT IMPORTANT ANYWAY.

I WILL SNAP SOME PICS TONIGHT, I JUST GOT MY CAMERA BACK LATE LAST NIGHT. IT IS DEFINATLY NOT AS NICE AS MOST OF THE CARS BUT HOPEFULLY IT WILL BE SOME DAY SOON.

THANKS AGAIN

Those are the standard 15 inch Z28 wheels by the way, not the 16 inch IROC wheels, so they are probably original to the car.

agreed, if not the original they are correct to the z-28 of `87
i will be looking to upgrade to the 16`s when i get the rest of the floor finished and after any mechanical i need to do. then i will start to upgrade the handeling and brakes, before any power upgrades. cause lets face it, the car always has to stop and go around corners, but does not always needs to do 1/4 mile speeds between lights
although it is fun on occasion, and will always want to until the budget allows me to

the car does need a body and paint job and hopefully i can get it done this summer, cause a friend of ours is getting married in september and wants to have a chevy parade for all the wedding partyto ride in. my wife and daughter are both in the wedding party and will ride in the camaro (if it looks good enough) while the rest of the wedding party will be in a covette convertable, a hummer 2, and a 69 chev pick up.
if it works out it will be alot better than a tinted out limo

the interior is all stock, including stereo system. it looks like all others with black interior.
t-roof, double rear folding seat, a/c, factory fog lights and rear defrost buttons on dash, the only thing missing inside is power locks and i would like to find and install a roof console with map light
the car is actually well optioned the only major things they forgot is the motor and the iroc boxes on the order sheet
i am trying to figure out how to upload pics of it

Take a picture and save it to your computer in your say Camaro folder.
When you are in the forum, in advanced mode you will see a paperclip at the top of the response window. Click that and it will allow you to upload a picture from the folder that you saved it.

i am amazed about how many vents they have in them all over the place. i think it is great. and if i need more ventilation i just have to pull off the roofs
and let me tell ya how much nicer it is working on the interior off the car in a small garage when you can pull out the roof and not keep smashing my head off it. not to mention lowering the windows and not having the window frame to work around
