From AutoBlog:

Quote:
We've been hearing some conjecture about what Camaro-based model would debut at the Chicago Auto Show today, and Tran from Camaro5 would appear to have the answer: The ZL1. The Chevrolet press conference isn't scheduled for another hour or so, but wandering the floor seems to have revealed that the expected hi-po pony car will eschew the Z28 designation in favor of ZL1. Either way, it'll pack a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 with a six-speed manual as part of a beefed-up driveline.

Other major features are said to include Magnetic Ride Control suspension, Brembo brakes, competition-spec cooling system, along with unique bodywork including a "Transformers 3 style" front bumper, unique hood and model-specific wheels. Camaro5 indicates that the interior has also been upgraded with a new steering wheel and silver trim. We'll have live pics of the Camaro from the reveal shortly, so stay tuned. Top tips, Jesse and Amber!

I really hope they make the Z28 the Boss competitor then. ZL1 is a name almost no one knows. It has barely any history with the car, especially compared to Z28.

Great, at last! ZL1? I don't care what they call it...

Black would suit this - so the vents and so on aren't so obvious - I like them but they are pretty massive :P

ZL1 was never the cars name either, it was the 427 cu engines designation. Not many people knew about the original car.

Yeh barley any history......just the most powerful and fastest (Still) Camaro GM ever built.

I just wish they would have stuck an LS7 in it, keep the ZL1 true to the 427!

I guess they won't be allowed to use that designation on their cars next year.
I was wondering the same thing. I thought SLP had the rights to ZL1...unless GM offered them a hefty sum to buy it back. Or, I wonder if it'll be another joint venture with SLP or will the car be built totally in-house? Questions to be pondered.

You could always paint them body color without a stripe, unless you have to get that, or put a black stripe package on to mute them a bit. Myself, should I be so lucky to afford one, is to swap the hood with something else. Like an SLP ZL1 hood. They'll likely be available at some point. Like their exclusive CME stuff used to be for the 4th gen, until they started to sell to everyone.

I'm glad they called it a ZL1 though. It resonates with Camaro buffs because there was only ONE car the ZL1 was designated for. [edit: Oops, I just realized I forgot about the ZL1 Corvette. Make that two cars.]

Upon a closer look at the pics I'm not liking the front end or steering wheel at all. I'm glad I wasn't planning on buying one now. It's cool for those that do want it though. I'm sure it'll be a beast.

Love it. Rather than "HP", we have some heritage involved while progressing into the future. GM could have spent their big chip here with the Z28 nameplate, but it appears they're holding it for the new platform to make more big waves in the future. Instead of getting one great car now, we get a great car now and a greater one later. Couldn't be happier.

I know you are joking because Ford is notorious for showing things you can't get in the showroom. Go to NAIAS and see how many cars Ford had on display that you can't actually go buy. LOL Nice caps by the way.

WOW I did not see this coming ZL-1 who knows maybe a Twin Turbo V6 will be called the Z/28.

All I can say is that I want one I am afraid we will see a clost to $60k MSRP on this car.

The ZL1 name is definitely better than "HP Edition," but I'm going to pass and wait and hope......

True enough - same story for the Aston Martin V12 Vantage - the "unpainted" carbon grilles are sometimes painted so they don't stand out so much.
On reflection, my favourite colour is CGM - so that with black would look pretty good in my eyes.

I'll see if it comes to the UK - if it does (and it's relatively unlikely, even though the ZR1 is here) I may put my name down... hmm.

I'm reserving my final judgment until I see more pictures and get to see it this weekend..

I agree.. ZL1? Really? SLP already has a ZL1 Camaro out there.

but at the moment, looks like I'm keeping my SS.

The steering wheel is obviously a response to every single reviewer of the car bitching about the awkwardness of the original wheel. GM is just trying to respond to complaints and make things more ergonimically friendly.

I guess with everyone pushing them to rush this car out as soon as possible, they didn't have time to engineer its own wheel from scratch.

I doubt you're going to be staring at the wheel while you're hurtling down the road at unbelieveable speeds anyway.
