Underhood Bowtie
What are your opinions on cutting out the bowtie on the insulation material to expose the cars color? Is there a safety factor involved here if removed?

The inner panel under there has strengthening ridges, it may not look like you want it to.

But you could add a flat piece of sheet metal to those ribs and paint it the same color as the body or even use a piece of polished aluminum or stainless steel. Aluminum would probably be best since the hood is aluminum.

Or cut a decal to fill in the area.

Like most things, there is a reason for that insulation over the engine compartment. Maybe not during the 1st year but if you cut out that bowtie and leave that part of the hood without insulation, you run the risk of the heat from the engine affecting the paint on the hood over time. JMVHO though. Something to think about.

Save the cut-out piece and put it behind the panel you paint, it would help with the heat issue somewhat.

Not to mention that if you are getting vinyl stripes, it may just melt those suckers down. Not good.

The insulation under the hood is more for SOUND than Heat. think about how hot it gets on the paint on a 90 degree summer day? it is going to be very very hot, I have had many cars without this insulation in the past ( my El Camino has none) and saw no bad effects to the paint from the heat.
but I wouldn't cut the emblem out I like it like it is..

Just use heat resistant paint.

We're talking about the paint on the top side of the hood where you wax and polish. The place where everybody looks first when checking out the car and admire the glossy paint. The heat from the engine overtime could ruin the finished paint job on the top of the hood.

thats not a cutaway, they had an insert attached to the panel, look closely, the normal panel has a recessed Bow Tie, the one here sticks out some... you just need to get some material in a different color and glue it to the existing insulation with industrial adhesive that will not deteriorate with heat.

Car paint is used to paint engine blocks and it holds up pretty well. If I were to do it I would spray some Lizardskin ceramic insulation on the top side of the sheetmetal before I attached it to the hood, just in case.

I had an idea, if he cuts it out just get a piece of the aluminum backed insulation I have seen put into cars and just slip it behind the cutout(aluminum side viewable), let the existing insulation clips hold it in place.

It almost looks like you could cut out part of the hood behind the cowl and make it a functional cowl induction hood... without the insualtion pice of course. The insulation isnt there to protect the paint guys. Like it was said before, its mainly for sound and cosmetic reasons so that the underside of the hood dosnt have to be smoothed out. A piece of isulation is much cheaper then another piece of aluminium to make it looked finished.

Heh, close. No, I was saying just paint the insulation. The part that is beveled in for the bow tie.

I have taken the insulation out of every car I've ever owned with no effects to the paint. I even have an El Camino that I've owned for 18 years with it removed. I've noticed that after time if left in, the insulation collects dust and dirt. Everytime you close the hood, some of that dirt is shaken onto the engine (which I always keep detailed because I'm anal).
