It is bi-modal and it is operated by a hydraulic control. Essentially, at 3500 RPM the valve automatically opens to partially bypass the mufflers and make it a 'straight back' exhaust, giving more free-flow and sound for spirited driving.

You can get a 'mild to wild' remote that will keep the butterfly valves open at all times, though

An even cheaper way is to just remove the fuse and it'll stay open all the time.

But you get drone below 2000 RPM while cruising. It's best left closed until RPM goes over drone frequency.

sorry not by hydraulic ..it's vacuum that opens the valve.

Essentially it allows the car to meet the Noise Pass By test. Under 80 dB now if I recall correctly at some speed like 60 mph. But on WOT or heavier accleration, the dual system allows for a much more open exhaust. The Corvette gets a few extra HP from that exhaust.

And I agree, driving the Z06 or even a base Corvette with the Dual Exhaust on the highway with the fust pulled is pretty much annoying. Having a switch to the circuit would allow for more control.

I have the noweeds kit and it's awesome when I want the dumps open, but I would not want them open all time.

bi mode exhaust is pretty much the most badass thing since sliced bread.

I absolutely hate cut outs and "diverters" but I LOVE the bi mode exhaust on the corvette and now the ZL1

That's because it's factory.
(sorry...inside joke with myself...I've been touting factory equipment so much lately....)

Love the dual-mode exhaust...so friggin' cool they decided to include it as part of the ZL1's formula!

No, not exactly -- because there's still a muffler. It's like SLPs Loudmouth II system. Or Tom Henry's exhaust systems...when open, it's a straight-through exhaust...very little muffling, very little restriction.

When it's closed, the air and vibrations is diverted through a more traditional muffler setup, which tames the sound.

This has been available on the Vettes for some years now and it is really pretty cool especially if you get a controler

I know... that's why I said SINCE sliced bread.... meaning everything that has happened AFTER sliced bread fails in comparison to the badass-ness of bi-mode exhausts...... sliced bread is the equivilant and/or has a greater amount of badass-ness than bi mode exhausts....

most free flowing aftermarket systems should still be louder at WOT than the bimodal would be able to produce (stock the car has to meet db restrictions at WOT too). It's basically so that it could be quiet when idling and at low load. Think of VTEC, but for mufflers.
