Arrow does the LS3 have Active Fuel Management? (Manual Trans)

ive been looking all over the place, and it seems like they only advertise that the Auto has Active Fuel Management, i am ordering a Camaro SS w/ the LS3 stick. i wanna know if it will run on 4 cylinders in traffic/ while cruising. this may sway my decision between auto and stick....

I don't think the manual will have the AFM.

nope, the LS3 definitely does not have AFM. I imagine that would be a programming nightmare with the driver in full control of the gears.

To be clear.

AFM is only available on the Auto (L99). And the Camaro will not have the gas guzzler tax.

Oh for heavens sake. The fact that the LS3 will not have Active Fuel Management (AFM) was stated up fornt in all the initial inforamtion releases from GM.

I am trying to be nice here, but dayum, this horse has been beaten to death.

That's how my dealer treated me, I gave him a $500 check (actully ordered for my son who is in Iraq), he gave me my Pre-Order WorkBench print out and a recipt for my $500. But then again I purchased 6 vette's from him so he better not have asked for anything more.

You don't need to do all this until the car actually comes in.

AFM requires the torque converter of an automatic in order to operate smoothly. Otherwise it would be a much harsher engagement.

Manuels always get better gas mileage than auto. Look at the corvette base model. same engine? yes. rated at 26 mpg on highway. thats what really changed my decision on the auto. originally I had the auto, but naw man, it want look right with that big engine.
ordered 10-20-08 black ss hurst short throw, sunroof (so the gals can hang out)

Get the manual and drive economically when not out to tear up the town. You can very easily get great mileage out of just about any engine with a manual transmission.

No. The camaro is smaller, lighter, and geared differently than the GXP. It should give you 23 mpg on the highway in with either the LS3 or L99

Yeah.. I am SO D@MN happy that it won't have the gas guzzler tax.. After hearing my dealer tell me the L99 won't be gas guzzler taxed I about wet myself from excitement.

If it is anything like my 1998 M6 LS1, I hope to get 25 MPG+ out on the open road, with minimal stops and cruising at about 70MPH.

I think the 23MPG is a little underrated especially since the gearing is very close to my 1998 (I believe the LS3 cars have about a .57 6th gear and about a 3.45 rear end gear ratio). I can get ~27-28 MPG cruising at 70 MPH.

For what its worth I am able to cruise in my 1998 at 80 MPH at a LITTLE less than 2000 RPM.

I know the 5th Gen is a little heavier, but weight is really only applicable when accelerating, where as aerodynamics are more important at constant highway speeds...The C5 Corvettes were able to get 30-31 MPG with the LS1 because they slid through the air. So a good comparison would be a LS3 manual C6 Vette and subtract around 4-5 MPG assuming the drag coefficient of the 5th Gen isn't worse than the 4th Gen.

Now, I don't know how much of a difference the 6.2L LS3 vs. my 5.7 LS1 will make, but these cars just loaf along on the highway.

Click the search button, type in 'gas guzzler tax' and hit go. Several of the threads that you find should answer your questions, at least check the one about halfway down the list that is specifically labeled gas guzzler tax. I'll answer this much of your question right here though; if a car has the gas guzzler tax (the Camaro won't) the tax is applied to the purchase price, think of it as a federal sales tax.

Slightly lighter and different gearing, and most importantly Fbodfather has stated they will avoid the gas guzzler tax. The formulas from the other thread are only estimations and cars with slightly worse mpg have avoided the tax, like the G8 GT and its 15/24 rating avoiding the gas guzzler, and with that accomplished I am confident GM can do the same with the L99 Camaro. The GXP numbers are a little concerning for the manual LS3 Camaro but there are enough differences such as it's crazy tall 0.57 sixth gear make the idea of the Camaro SS avoiding the guzzler tax realistic. Beyond that we are all just waiting on the official numbers to be released.
