If you really want semantics, it would be "physically-challenged" however, we are discussing "handicapped parking spaces/placards/plates" as titled by the BMV of the applicable state of the forum member responding to said discussion.

Yup! Actually had a lady stop & stare, as I was pulling into a handicap spot. As soon as my car stopped, she started bitching. What the hell! People need to understand that you don't have to drive a big ass van, to be handicapped.

On many occasions I see people get out of cars that parked handicapped and they appear to be as normal as me other than the blue thing on the mirror. I often wonder how many people abuse these spots which in my mind are for people who are immobile to a point where walking an extra 50 yards would make life difficult. I have a grandmother with severe rumatoid arthritus and we have had to drop her off at the front door so I can go park the car because the handicapped spots are all full. it didnt bother me much except the fact it was 5 degrees outside and it was much harder to unload her. anyway thats my rant

Use my tag too, some days I don't, depends on what kind of day I'm having. No ankle joint in right foot and possibly doing the same surgery on left foot. Makes it hard to walk some days even harder when I have to walk from the south 40 to get to work place or where ever I'm headed. Every step is painful and has been for the last 19 years, so a shorter distance to walk on most days is nice.

I'm not disabled, but my sister has a handicap placard for her Multiple Sclerosis. She drives a 2011 Lincoln MKX, and gets dirty looks all the time when she parks in handicap spots - probably because of her age (28). She's even had people honk at her for taking too long to make it across a parking lot to the store she was going (and she uses a cane and has a visible limp). They are lucky I wasn't with her when that happened. Way too many people abuse having a placard, but it should not matter how old you are, or what kind of car you drive. If you need it, use it, that's why they are there.

I see contractor trucks and motorcycles with disabled plates in Ca. Wouldn't be concerned a bit if I saw a Camaro with DP plates.

I had my friend flip me crap about me having D.A.V. ( Disable American Veteran) plates. He said, "oh yah that great my tax dollars paying for your car." And I told him after he goes and fights a war like I did, he can then bitch about it. Btw, I have hearing loss and torn tendons in my left hand.

Dont take me wrong on this but some people with the placards abuse it sometimes. One example person getting out of the car no limp, both legs and arms in place, no cane, running and skipping through the lot to get to the door of the store. Didnt look handicap to me.

Another person who could have used the spot better in a wheel chair, walkers, crutches, etc now has to park in a spot that is not handicap width.

This happens to my uncle, father in law, sister in law all of them are missing their left leg. My uncle and father in law cant wear a fake legs due to issues. One day my uncle got into a shouting match with another person who didnt look at all handicap. The guy I metioned above. Now serioulsy if you can walk (with out a limp), jump, skip, run ,and move actively do you realy need to park in a handicap spot?

Big problem with misuese of disabled plates in San Francisco. A DP plate allows you to park all day in front of a parking meter without feeding any quarters to it. Some office workers are obviously borrowing grandma's plate to game the system and park free in downtown SF.
To be fair though many people are legit handicapped without any external evidence of the disability.

LOLOLOL

I have multiple sclerosis (10 yrs) and was just diagnosed with degenerative arthritis in the left knee.
Thanks...you made my day.... I'm not that physically challenged for me to get the handicap plates/window cling-thingy.

My sister has Multiple Sclerosis as well. Her condition is pretty bad, and has gotten worse fairly recently. She is transitioning from a cane to a walker. She gets looks all the time because of her age probably.

Finally! I had a C 7/8 injury 20 years ago racing in the New Zealand National Motorcycle Road Racing Championships riding for Team America. Technically I cannot move anything below mid chest level. Before I got out of the hospital a paralyzed counselor visited my parents home driving a Porsche 924 with an automatic in it stock. I thought if this guy who had a worse injury than mine could drive a sports car so could I. The first cars were an 1990 Eagle Talon Turbo AWD and then a 2001 Dodge Stratus RT. Not super fast, but great handling. Both could do 125 on a stretch and on a track I could pass REAL sports cars with them. I am in a wheelchair all waking hours. My Dodge was just coming up to 100,000 miles and I wanted a new car. I liked the Camaro from the beginning but I tested the new 2011 Mustang first. It had good HP and torque and handled the twisty's real nice, but it wasn't ver wheelchair friendly with a huge gap to transverse between chair and seat. No back seat at all for people or for putting a chair into. Terrible ergonomics also for the disabled. I then went and checked out the 2011 Camaro 2SS/RS and it had the WOW factor that the Mustang totally lacked. The Camaro had similar HP and torque and handled about the same. It was much more friendly for getting in and out of the car and for throwing a chair in and out of. I have a solid chair that you pop the wheels off of and fold the back. I am getting a new Titanium chair that is super light in the next few weeks. None of this is off of Government money by the way.
I just put my placard off the mirror when I park and don't have a disabled license p[late because I don't want people judging who I am before I even get out of the car. I get the first look when I pull in of "Hey, they're not supposed to be parking here." Then the placard goes up and I pul the wheelchair out and start to assemble it which takes about 30 seconds. Almost all the time I get people coming up to ask about my car and how great it looks. Occasionally they ask about my hand controls I use to accelerated and brake with. The attitude I get from them afterwards ranges from wow I wish I had that car to I didn't know you people could drive those type of cars. I have pumped the Cmaro up to 428 HP using a CAI form CAi and a Corsa Cat Back and Dyno tuning. Plan to take it to the track this summer for some advanced driving classes and track time. I raced cars for 10 years after my accident off and on road.

Being handicap (lost leg in MC accident), walking any distance is a bitch. I won't even go in to all the complications, but the H-cap spots help me out alot. I could care less if someone has a problem with me parking my Camaro in one of these spots. Its none of their f@#$%^in business as long as you hang a tag or have the plate.

I question no one if they have the tag or plate- its none of my business what ails them. Karma comes around to those who abuse.

For those who abuse disabled plates and placard, Ca law allows any peace officer to ask a person using a disabled plate for their DP registration. It's a $1,000 fine if you are caught using a plate or placard that does not belong to you.

I am 53 and I have had a disabled parking permit since I was about 22. I have had over 25 surgeries of which most of them have been on my knees and hips. One surgery on my left knee, 3 on my right including having it replaced twice. I have had about 10 on my hips including both of them being replaced twice. I have now also have both shoulders replaced, and my elbows are in very bad shape. Before I got this Camaro I had a 78 Camaro, a 79 Corvette and a 93 Trans Am and other nice vehicles. I have had many many comments to me over the years. Some people are very very rude about it, but yet some people once they see me walk they don't say anything. I try not to be rude back to people except the ones that are very rude. My comment back to the rude ones is "Do you think I walk this way because I F**king like to?" Trust me I LOVE MY CAMARO, but I would give it up in a second and drive a Prius if I could walk normal.

Disabled

You don't have to look like something is wrong with you to be disabled, I have M.S. and I have had 5 back operations. I usually get the same looks when I pull up in my Camaro SSRS until I get out of the car with my cane and try to hobble to the door. If a person has a plate or a card that they hang from thier mirror they have to get a note from thier doctor to get one.Yes, some people do abuse this right, but this is the real world and some one will all ways do that. If I am able to walk with not to much trouble I don't all ways use the parking spots, but the doctors don't have to much trouble handing out the notes if you ask for them, even if they know that thier patients have no trouble getting around. I am just spoutting off about this right now, but I have seen to many times a person cut off a van to get a spot when they could walk and the person in the van gets out with a wheelchair if htey can get the chair out of the van at all. Thanks for listening to me,
Dave D.

Eleven years ago I had a nasty spill on my motorcycle , after 14 surgeries I ended up having my left ankle fused. I have to wear a shoe lift now and on most days you can't tell I have a limp. BUT I never know when my ankle or knees will decide this is the day I will cause you pain. So while I might not look disabled going into the store I could end up limping on my way out and cursing because I forgot my cane.

The few times I have parked my SS in a handicap spot I have gotten those evil eye glances. At times I want to stop them and ask them if they want to see my scars and special shoe.

I beg to differ with the new and improved social sensitivity, many "handicapped" people are very able to do most anything they want...
