PAINTING THE GILLS - HELP.

Gents, I am painting my stripes but after viewing several BumbleBee photos, I am also seriously contemplating painting the gills.

Can this been done using airbrush techniques?
Is a clear coat required after airbrushing or can the airbrush paint be mixed with clear??

I do not want my rear quarter panel sprayed with clear as I am worried about overspray, etc.

When my stripes get painted, the spoiler, rear deck lid, hood and frot fascia are all being removed in order to avoid any overspray.

The side gills aren't painted or cut out. They're just indented into the sheet metal.

I wouldn't bother with this as it will look tacky. Get a black car if you are worried about the fake gills. Cutting them out is not a smart decision either since it will weeken the stru rural integrity of the camaro. Since it won't be fun tional, all you would be doing when driving is getting crap in there that would be hard to clean.

Cutting them out is the way to go if you want that look. You could box it in from the back so it any mud or water would not spread to the inner fender.

Unless one of the aftermarket companies beats me to it, I am thinking of getting a special raised "gill accent" piece fabricated I can attach that looks like the '69s.

I think it might look great with certain color combos.

The jury is still out.

Has your paint guy ever heard of masking paper or plastic? If used, there won't be any overspray any where it isn't suppose to be.No need to remove anything. If he doesn't know this, I wouldn't let him touch your car. And yes....airbrushing should be clear coated....just like the stripes.

Unless someone sells a really nice custom kit and you have it completely cut out it's going to look bad. I would have loved for them to be open but I've seen many of these little projects on other guys cars and it's one sure way to ruin a 35 thousand dollar car.

I understand your pain Rally Fever. I feel similar about the gills. Just being an indentation as they come from the factory, really makes them seem..... like an afterthought, incomplete, silly to even have them, etc. Its frustrating for me. When I see a version (i.e. Bumblebee) that has what appears to be actual slits there, then they look really bad ass. Someone had mentioned using black vinyl to simulate a 3D look to the gills. I think that's what I will be doing with my Red Camaro initially. Then over time if there are aftermarket add on components like a chrome trim to go over the gills to give them additional simulated 3D depth, I'll probably add those. I wish they had done something from the factory (vinyl, trim, etc) to make them look more 3D right from the factory or not included them at all.

Arioch, the 69's gill were very similar to the 5th gens. some had the chrome accents you mention, my 69 did. My take on it was to try vinyl striping before painting anything to see if I like it. You can get different colors, like silver or black and see how they go with your paint scheme

Cutting them out is a very bad idea. The gills lead directly to the back seat and the trunk, not to the fender wells.

I have seen people do it on the S10 forum. I was gonna do it on my S10 cause the grill and fascia are faded out from UV exposure.

yes you should clearcoat after airbrushing. It would look much better then,

Oh man that looks hot as hell. Black airbrushed gills on a Rally Yellow 2SS/RS with black rally stripes would be pure sex. I was planning on leaving mine alone but if they turn out that good I just may have to get this done as soon as I get mine.

Making the side vents by painting or vinyl is so poser like! Its like putting on a fake hood scoop. Leave it as is. It looks good already. If you do that you might as well go with the hood scoop too.

Thanks for all the info.
I am still having mixed feelings....
I think the black gills will "pop" wit the black stripes.
I also plan on going black metallic vice standard black.
I may go vinyl just to look at the profile prior to painting.

My concern with overspray is my concern, not the paint shop's.
How do they just clear the gills? Isn't it typically "blended?

Don't cut open the metal. That's an accident waiting to happen. Can you say rust?

stickers, you can put stickers on thar or . . . someone will come out with a decorative insert that you and stick on via 3M adhesive or . . . drill a couple of holes, seal the raw edge and snap in the decorative inserts or . . . paint and clear. Don't forget the portholes, jk
