Called the body shop to check in on things were going. AKA I wanted to make sure they were on top of everything. Tommy, guy I spoke with at the body shop, is going to call back in a few hours with the estimates for all of the options. He was able to give me a rough estimate for the pace car stripes though...

....wait for it.....

.....$1,500

I'm not really feeling that number, like at all. But I also don't know how much painted stripes usually go for. Has anyone had pace car stripes painted on or possible extensive stripe work done that could let me know if this is the right ballpark?

One of our local guys had rally stripes painted on and it cost $700. 1,500 seems really high. Tell him you are going to get more estimates and see if that lowers the price

Hopefully when he calls back it'll be a lower number. But worst case scenario is I just get the stripes painted somewhere else for cheaper

I've learned this mistake firsthand. Don't shop for numbers, look at the quality. I made a 1k mistake my first go around for stripes. Hindsight, I should have paid the 2k I was quoted for an excellent shop. My 1k blunder turned into another 1.5k to get it back where I wanted it. This was after a total of 5 weeks bickering back and forth with painter #1 to get my car back to the way it was and get it the hell out of that shop!!

Shop the shop and their rep, not the $$$ amount. Not preaching, just letting you know the headache I went through.

that's exactly why I went with Wagonwork. Everyone I talk to said they are the best in the area. That and they use some fancy European paint brand.

My white aux. gauge overlays arrived today from 6litereater So I've spent most of my afternoon installing these bad boys. Now all I want to say is that this is not a complicated install, but it does take a decent amount of time to do.

The overlays

The OEM aux gauges

Now the fun part starts; taking it apart. First thing I did was undo these little clipy things that hold the wiring in place. They were just in the way.

The next step is taking apart the aux gauges. It's pretty straight forward really. Everything is held together via clips so nothing to unscrew.

The aux gauges taken apart

Here I ran into a bit of a hiccup, how do I get the needles off. Well I thought for a moment and decided that I was just going to call Ofer as he has done this before. Luckily he answered and was able to walk me through the process of getting the needles off.

The black caps off the needles.

Turns out though, getting the needles off was a lot harder than Ofer made it out to be. That and I wasn't able to find a small/tiny fork (the tool of choice for this install). Luckily I figured out a way around that. The overlays are pretty flexible, and if you bend them just right you can slip over the needle. Mind you this was/is a bit hard, but IMO this way is much easier than trying to get the needles off. That and I was terrified of breaking the needles so this seemed like a safer alternative.

The faceless gauges

The OEM overlays

Installing the white overlays was the same process, but in reverse. Not too hard, though the white overlays did not have the alignment holes punched out. So I used a tiny little exacto-knife and made them myself.

Comparison of white vs OEM

The finished product.

When I plugged the aux gauges back in they didn't do the normal start up thing, kind of had a panic attack. Because the entire time I'm talking with Ofer he's telling me how careful I have to be to not break the motor attached to the needles. But, turns out: the aux gauges don't work until you turn the car on dodged that bullet.

Now, after this super long post; a before and after shot. I did my best to take the photo from the same angle.

AFTER

Great job Stieger!!! Looks super!!

2 things... $1500 is a bit high, but they'll probably pull panels to do it right with nice sharp lines, AND when completed, you probably won't be able to feel a ridge at the stripes edge...

If you're not working at the moment, ask if you can help with sanding, it's a long shot, and comes with caveats, (no warranty possibly) they'll probably say no, but it never hurts to ask.

That's not bad at all Doug. I haven't seen your camaro in person but the photos show me that the guy who did your stripes did a top notch job.

Thanks. Unfortunately I'm working full time currently. I would LOVE to be able to help with the sanding. When Kaylee was at Back Street I stayed with her the whole time helping out where I could. It's a little thing, but it really meant a lot to me.

Tommy didn't get back to me with the estimates on Friday, which is fine. I told him that if he didn't get to them Friday it's no big deal and I'll just wait to hear from him tomorrow or Tuesday. I've found that when other people have Kaylee's keys it's best to be the most cooperative customer they've ever had.

I also perused through the stripe compilation thread, lots of good stripe combos in there, and it seems that the price point for painting on the pace car stripes has been around $1,500 - $2,000. Which makes me feel better about the price.
