Post up your 5th generation mistakes
Because it might be useful to others. I'll list mine below as I've owned 2 2001 TA's; one an A4 coupe the other an M6 convertible(I miss this one).
Let's see... 1. The Preditor tuner was a good for clearing codes after I got my hands on HP Tuner. First tune was crap. 2. Oh Yes! the Granetelli MAF that made my engine ping like a coffee can full of bolts. Corvette MAF worked out great (Screened). 3. Descreening a perfectly good stock MAF. 4. The BBK 80mm throttle body thru a 78mm plate. Doh! This ended up stranding me on the highway when my TB cable broke and cracked the butterfly. A stock ported and polished TB was perfect. There is more but I can't think of them now. But the above were costly mistakes I didn't repeat on TA # 2. I am putting this out here because I was being bashed in the Transmission Section for posting that the new Hurst shifter for the A6 was way overpriced ($495.00). That is a lot of money for some interior jewelry that provides no performance gain. I would like to know if there is anything someone purchased for the 5th generation that could be considered in the same category as above. PM me if you like. And I hope this helps someone. I guess we all have some regret or other, I sold a perfectly good 71 Hemi Cuda 8 months after I got it...
As for the new Camaros, there are a few expensive mistakes I've heard about... but most of the things like interior jewelry are subjective and personal taste.. I paid almost as much as you mentioned for my MGW shifter, but... it is night and day different than the factory shifter, and I love that it has the strong centering springs... Other than that, I've not really spent much on mine...

For me it was buying an LT1. I liked it, but once I wanted to sell no one wanted it. I was lucky when one dealer offered me $6,500 as a trade on a 5th gen. Much better than the $2,500 others were offering me.

Folks don't get me wrong here. The Camaro is a winner, and I will pay for a quality product. But some places are marking up items sky high. When I get back from Iraq I will spend my share of it, you can count on it. I will take delivery of mine at the end of July and commence the upgrades after a 300 mile break-in period. This is what I have in mind:
Items I've bought: LS9 Cam DOD & VVT delete kit from Texas Speed ARP Head and Cam and Balancer Bolt Crankshaft Pin Kit New Crank Seal LS3 Intake Valves (Hollow Stem) LS9 Exhaust Valves Hollow & Sodium Filled) LS3 Springs LS9 Head Gaskets Magnetic Oil Pan Drain Plug Lokar Transmission Dipstick Transmission Drain Plug Oil Catch Can HP Tuner I will install all this myself and tune out the DOD and VVT. I have done this before and it's a lot of work but I get much satisfaction in return. A lesson learned on this is I will not port and polish my heads again. I would send it to a shop now. Items to get once the above is completed: MPD1 Z Force Hood - Looks great and is functional E-Force blower NOWEEDS Diverters - Loud when I want it, quiet when the top is down. Now the last item I admit is high priced but it will give me what I want. The blower I could do myself but I will make the trip to Waterbury, CT and let Jannetty Racing install and tune. Are you listening Ted? This grumpy old man doesn't need 1000 HP, but around 500 would be nice. |

Yeah, a few dollars, I guess I'm hoping none of that is a mistake... I'll get my car back in two weeks, she is going to be a beast to say the least...I'm blown twice...once on the left, and once on the right, I feel like the creamy filling in the middle of an oreo...
