Lightbulb Camaro5fest II - Drag Racing - rules/classifications?

From this thread: Camaro5 Fest II Information and Schedule

Saturday (April 16th, 2011)

4:00 pm – 8:00 pm: Bracket racing / Exhibitions / Grudge Races (American Racing Headers)

What are the rules/regulations for the drag racing event? Is it all bracket racing? Or will it be divided into classes? Like stock... bolt ons... heads/cam+, forced induction, etc... ?

Also, how is qualifying going to be ran? Didn't see this info listed anywhere...

Thanks!!

we're probably gonna have a quick 16

and two other bracket classes...

Still working out the details.

ARH will be awarding prize money to the top two in each class.

This is an area that definitely needs improvement from the first fest! Nobody had a clue what was going on or how the classes were going to be set up. One thing that has to be considered when trying run classes such as (stock , bolt-on ect.) is having the staff check over the cars or trusting what the owner says is done to his or her car. In my eyes this is the way it should be , having heads up races for the individual Fast list classes. The easiest least amount of involvement would be to just do E.T. brackets where you choose your index (11, 11.5, 12, 12.5) and run a quick 16.

However you guys decide to do it. Try to get the info out ahead of time and have fun!

it's not quite that simple...

the reason we have qualifying is so we can detrmine what everyone will run... we'll toss out the quick 16 since they will have their own class.

We'll then look at all the times and figure out what the best breakout times are. then set the brackets up so the most amount of people will be able to compete in a fair class.

May not be perfect but this is more about exposing people to the sport than it is about full on drag racing.

I agree completely with you about the exposure of Drag racing to those that havent been around it. At the first fest thats why they had basically a test and tune the majority of the day for those that wanted to try something new. However I think there is also interest in the (Full on Drag racing) from a racers and spectators stand point. A perfect way to finish the evening at the fest.

we've never seen him drive, 15 sec could be a goal as he's in the 18 sec class now.

I'm hoping someone will let me ride along once, as I will be flying in and will not have my car.

I say we set up the drag racing portion of the event in Classes by Modifications:

A) Stock - sub-classes: automatic trans class & 6-speed class?
B) Bolt-Ons (cold air, headers, exhaust, etc) sub-classes: low 12s, high 12s, tires, etc.
C) Internals (camshafts, heads, rear gears, etc)
D) Forced Induction (superchargers, turbochargers, nitrous)
E) Unlimited - 9 second and lower (if needed, not sure who all is showing up with the big power cars..)

Run qualifying sessions on Friday. If there are a lot of cars in one specific class (say more than 8 or 16 for the brackets), divide the class into the fastest half and the slowest half, by tire types, etc.

Also I don't mind helping out on the drag strip either. I'm sure some people would love some advice on the burnout box, staging, launching the car, using street tires on the track, shift points, traction control modes, etc.

Lets make this event fun for everyone and a little competitive at the same time!!

Grouping everyone in 11, 12, 13, second classes was fine for last year, but it really could improve this year.

Last year I ran 5 or 6 passes all in the 12.9 range and had no chance at competing... Guess I could have sandbagged one run and got a 13 ticket.

A lot of us are coming to race and it would be cool to have some REAL competition set up... JMHO...

I'm in no way trying to rain on the parade here.

Please understand that our sponsor has agreed to pay prize money for 1st and 2nd place for 3 classes....

Last year 3 classes of competitve racing was more than enough...

Most people in attendance just wanted to try it a couple times. But I will concede that we'll take a look at qualifying and see what makes sense....

It's hard to find the balance beetween first timers and die hard 1320 guys.

FWIW

Oh sorry, didn't know it was already set up like that with ARH.

What are the 3 classes for now? The Bracket Racing / Exhibitions / Grudge Races as mentioned in the other thread?

Thanks

I totally understand, but for a first timer the competition might not be as important. When I first went to the track I just wanted to run down and see what my times are. Test and tune is a perfect opportunity to do this.

There are going to be a lot more fast cars this year than last, and more experienced track goers. I think those people just want more competition than trying to repeat their qualifying pass.

Not trying to mess up your plans though, and I'll run no matter how you set it up.

Exhibitions and grudge races are just that. not part of the actual races... Just a chance for the big boys to show off a bit and for others to beat up each other..

Last year we did the brackets by times... quick 16, 11 breakout and 13 breakout If I remember correctly. any one faster than 11 was in the quick 16 is how it worked out.

No I totally agree with you and that is why we have so much time for TT, we want those not ready to compete to have tons of time to learn the sport.

So, for now I'm hesitant to define the classes without knowing who's gonna show up and how fast everyone is.

if that makes sense....

Actually I think you're just trying to skew this whole thing to give team LS3 an advantage!

We were up against the same thing when we put on the Texas Camaro Nationals in Oct. We managed to get a whole bunch of new folks and 2 classes of V6 cars out there running...

... Also one really good class separator we used was Street Tire only and Drag Radials/Slicks. A lot of folks won't have DR's and the ones that do will be serious racers.

However it works out it will be a blast... Prize money is cool... but Bragging Rights is way cooler...
