Unhappy I am not ashamed... V6 bound.

This is my first post. Just joined, although I've been salivating over photos on the site for years.

I just wanted to take the chance to defend my decision to make a 2010 Camaro V6 my next car. I've been driving my 1997 SS for over 6 years now, and it has been wonderful to me. I attempted to sell it on eBay last year, but set my reserve so high that I knew it wouldn't sell. I couldn't part with it.

The past three years have been torture as I cannot be convinced to look at any other car than a 2010 Camaro as my next purchase. Up until a few months ago, I was hell-bent on buying a black 2010 SS/RS to match (or replace) the one I currently own. This was until the pricing options were released.

I'll be graduating from college this spring (Go Hoos!) and as such I don't have a hell of a lot of money to spend right now. Looking at not only MSRP, but also dealer markups, I have been sobered into the realization that I probably won't be able to afford a new SS.

I love my car, but man putting premium gas into a 5.7L V8 every week is really wearing my wallet thin. Plus I don't really want to piss off President Obama... I kinda like the guy. With the country/world having so many concerns over vehicle emissions, I can't help but pretend that I'm making the switch for humanitarian reasons.

Well all being said, I think I've finally decided to do the responsible thing. I'm getting a V6. 2LT/RS, now to choose a color...

Camaro is a Camaro weather it be V6 or V8.... V6 is a hell of a punch for the engine it is.

Nothing to be ashamed or appologetic about buying the V6. Right now I AM DRIVING A 4 CYL, 170hp sports car. I will now also have a V6 with 304hp. now I have all sorts of fun driving my 4 cly sports car, I am sure I will in the V6..
You made a great choice... neve feel bad about it.

I am actually looking forward to driving the V6. It'll be my first 300+hp car and I can't wait to feel the thing actually respond when I hit the gas.

I rented a 350Z in San Diego a couple of years ago and I LOVED it. And I don't even think that was 300hp.

No shame whatsoever! Look at it this way: When I bought my 1986 Corvette new, it had 230 horsepower. That seemed like tons at the time. When I bought my 1994 Z28, it had a then-amazing 275 horsepower. It wasn't all that long ago that you had to order an aftermarket version of an F-body (like a Firehawk Firebird) to crack 300 ponies. So 300-plus hp in a more insurance-friendly V6 is an OUTSTANDING decision for a recent college grad. Crap, the V6 in my 1982 Firebird--the car I owned when I graduated from college in 1983--made a lousy 120 horsepower!

A v6 camaro is the best option for a lot of people including me. Good gas mileage, friendly insurance rates, and unless you are a racer, all the car most of us will ever need...2lt/rs.. dont know the color yet. for me color is a more difficult decision than v6 vrs v8.

I see you mention Markup in your first post. Just make sure to shop around at dealers to get one that doesn't charge a markup

Also not ashamed...
I will get the RS for now, that has almost as much horsepower as my '02 Z/28
and (hopefully) later I will get a Z/28 again or an SS.

I'm in this crowd. Gas, price, insurance was part of what swayed me. Got lots of friends that say it's ""not a real" muscle car. They drive cobra's and vettes. Somehow, I'm buying this car for me, and I wanted a V6. I could probably afford a V8, and I'm getting options up the wazoo on my v6 (rs, stripes, manual) but somehow, the v6 just seems right for me. Looking forward to my camaro, so I know you are too...

I got the V6....people seem to forget it is no slouch. Just remember it has more horsepower than many V8's.

I also ordered the V6,with 304 hp,thats more than my 1993 formula Firebird which had 275 Hp,I really don't need the V8..i can't help but wonder about all the people on this website who ordered a $30.000+ SS with the economy and the unemployment we have now.. You still have to make payments every month!!!

The V6 is a great new engine. You can't go wrong.

As far as responsibility, these mileage numbers are awfully close, imho.

V6
17/25 man
18/27 auto
V8
15/22 man
15/23 auto

GM supplied EPA estimates.

I'm getting manual trans, so it's 15 or 17 mpg city, 22 or 25 hwy, not much difference.

I told my insurance agent I ordered a new Camaro and the first thing out of her mouth was "Does it have SS in the name?" She was surprised when I told her no, I ordered a V-6... so, enjoy the Camaro experience 2010 style..after all, it's your money

True, I suppose.
Just as an example, in a 2010 SS, my trip back home to Philly from Charlottesville (~300mi) would burn 13.6 gallons of gas. I think my current SS must get less than 20 because my 15 gallon tank can barely make the trip.

On the other hand the V6 will get me there on 12 gallons. Does anyone know what type of fuel is recommended for each? Because on top of the difference in mileage, the difference in gas price will also be a factor. It definitely adds up in the long run...

But, nothing beats the sound and feel of a V8. Can't win em all I guess...

^^ V6 only needs Regular, V8 will need premium... so that right there makes a difference, especially around here, premium is around .30 a gallon more!! Rediuclous.

Agreed. That was part of what made it to where I could no longer afford the 86. I was running premium, which increased my gas bill by almost 40 bucks a month just to begin with.

Even if the V6 and V8 got the same gas mileage, the premium would still be about 25 bucks a month extra for me.

As it stands I'm looking at about, using today's prices, 90 bucks a month for gas with the V6 and 130 for the V8. Then take into account the higher payment and the higher insurance too.

I'll be happy with a V6.

The first step is to admit you want a V6, then you can begin to be proud.

Hi all i am posting for the first time. I have been on this site alot and for a while. My gf gets angry when i get on bc she knows ill be here a while lol. I am among the many who is considering the 6. The insurence for the 8 and the gas not to mention extra to buy it adds up. still a big decision as far as 6 vs 8

If you are going to get a 2LT v6 RS, why not just go with a 1SS like me for around the same price. I would always go performance over features and in this case, you might be disappointed in the V6 since you're used to a car that was lighter and had a quicker 0-60...The gas difference is not that big a deal but the insurance costs are larger with the SS as well. I personally would wait a year and save up enough money to make a downpayment large enough to lower your monthly payments and get the SS at a later time and enjoy your current SS for another year...
