LSD (Limited Slip Differential)

I am getting a 2LT/RS and must have had my head in the ground about v6 auto not having LSD. I am not the greatest stick driver in the world, even though I drive one daily. This car will be my daily driver and I live in KY where we get a few snow storms a year. I really wanted an automatic, but paying $1000 more and not having LSD now has me rethinking. What do you guys think?

I'd get the manual unless you really dispise driving one. If you get the auto you could always have a LSD installed afterwards.

When you do a burnout and go back to to look at your marks you will regret not getting the posi.

It's not that i'm horrible at it, i never stall or anything like that. It's more like i'm not sure how high to take rpm's to maximize speed, etc. Granted, the stick i drive back and forth to work is a 1.3l nissan, my z is an auto.
Take the camaro for instance, when trying to get my best time, how high should i take rpm in 1,2,3,etc.

All the way.

seriously, I would shift just before redline. I drive my VW like it is a race car, I used to shift well into the red zone. Now I baby it and shift at about 6K instead of 6500. I regularly shift about 4-5,000.

Dude it's really not that hard. It just takes a keen perception and common sense. You'll regret buying the automatic the first time you step on the pedal and have to wait for the car to drop a gear. Manuals are way more convenient.

This post is a bit confusing. Does the LSD come on a v6 at all?
Thought you couldnt get a LSD on the V6 whether or not it was an auto or manual? Also there was no option that I was aware of.

What is the reason for that? Technically speaking?

referring to your 'other statement' here...

how do you propose to do that... short of buying it through the parts counter or a salvage yard?

I always stalled in reverse. Something in my brain didn't want me to operate a clutch while looking over my shoulder.

Stalled my 09 Corvette first drive with salesman. It was in 3rd instead of 1st gear. DOH! Nervous and anxious moment.

Said to myself, f - it, I'm paying $xxxxxx, I'll do whatever I damn well please.

so if you look over your shoulder in first, do you still stall?

his original statement was in white, so my inquiries were also kept under the radar

My Sister had a 454 Monte Carlo back in the late 70s when I first got my license, it did not have positive traction. I can remember leaving a black mark and a smoke screen for what seemed like forever, the only problem was the car just sat there for a few seconds and the smoke from the driver's side tire would catch up to the windows. It was an automatic and it went through all 3 gears in the first hundred feet before down shifting back to 2nd gear and burning the tire off again. This thing was a joke. I just can not imagine having a 300 HP car with single traction.

I'm not sure but I did notice it's a clutch setup. Oh and the housings are different on the posi vs no posi diffs. The possi diffs are reinforced and appear much stronger.

Well, what's the secret Spike?

Benefits

The main advantage of a limited slip differential is shown by considering the case of a standard (or "open") differential where one wheel has no contact with the ground at all. In such a case, the contacting wheel will remain stationary, and the non-contacting wheel will rotate freely—the torque transmitted will be equal at both wheels, but will not exceed the threshold of torque needed to move the vehicle, and thus the vehicle will remain stationary. In everyday use on typical roads, such a situation is very unlikely, and so a normal differential suffices. For more demanding use, such as driving in mud, off-road, or for high performance vehicles, such a state of affairs is undesirable, and the LSD can be employed to deal with it. By limiting the angular velocity difference between a pair of driven wheels, useful torque can be transmitted as long as there is some traction available on at least one of the wheels.
Can someone explain this in layman's terms? Thanks

On a dry road LSD is good because it sends power to both wheels and gives you better traction. On wet or slick roads LSD is bad because the one wheel that otherwise would have kept the rear end centered in your lane is spinning out of control with the other wheel.
