New Scion sport coupe
Many of you know about the Toyota FT-86, and know how LONG and DRAWN OUT it's development has been... it's basically one of those "I'll believe it's going to be produced when I actually see one on a dealer lot" cars.. well, they introduced another concept today in New York. "95% production ready" supposedly, and it is said to go on sale next year..
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1163 There's the link, you'll have to scroll down through the Wall O Text press release for the pictures, I actually kind of like it... from some angles it looks like an Alfa Romeo 8-C... it is certainly a LITTLE car though.. I suppose it has to be with a target weight of less than 3000lbs.. (2700 was the last number I heard thrown around) Obviously the Wheels, Breaks, and rear diffuser won't make production.. Aside from those, Wow.

ugh, it's so close, but IMHO it is WAY overdone for my tastes. I don't remember the origional concept being so busy.

It is teh slow. Boxer 4s are useless without the turbo, they made a big mistake imo. What is the aftermarket going to do with an n/a 2.0l boxer 4???

@ Stew, the scion VP said in an interview that this model is the "Over the top" concept, basically what they imagine enthusiasts WOULD do in the aftermarket, bigger wheels/breaks/tires, rear diffuser.

Yeah.. pretty much... its just one of those instances where America gets the shaft, it's going to be a Toyota everywhere else.

That is a significant styling improvement over what we have come to expect from Scion.

I like it but to me the original FT-86 concept was the best looking. All of these supposed improvements are killing the design

I like the styling but there are a lot of better cars for the money this car will cost, domestic and foreign.

The thing is..Scion is taking a step in offering exotic style and hopefully (maybe?) some significant performance to back it up. I would be all in favor of a mid-20K range Scion sport coupe that would be able to freaking humble up Z car drivers (300-370Z).
For too long Nissan has dominated the sport coupe world with their damned Z cars, nothing would make me happier to see that reign end, and none too soon. I would HAIL the death of the Z car. |

I have a sinking suspicion that this will be a sub 200HP car. Does toyota even make a 200 HP engine? j/k

I like it, the front fender lines remind me of a Javelin. The most important thing is for them to give it some umph. Good looks and mediocre performance just don't cut it anymore.

I am really looking forward to this car, the more affordable performance vehicles to keep the breed alive the better. Also, performance is more than acceleration. An car with decent power, excellent gas mileage and awesome handling would be a hit right now. Remember this is going to be around 1/2 ton lighter than the Camaro so even 200 HP will scoot! And it is designed for an ultra low center of gravity, excellent weight distribution, and generally an excellent platform. One of the great things about it is that it is a dedicated platform for a sports car, unlike the Camaro and the CHallenger ( and even the Mustang to an extent with it's Lincoln LS Ansestor) which rely on modified Sedan platforms. I have to give Toyota credit, though I would much rather see this as a Toyota Celica as they desperatly need an injection of Sporty in their lineup. Remember in the 80s and to a lesser extent, the 90s Toyota made fun cars with a little passion and individuality.. The origional US Celica? RWD Corollas? Supras? MR2s (not that poor excuse called and MR Spyder), the even had a RWD sedan at one point with the Cressida! And the origional toyota Pickups? I still love the black 4x4 from Back to the Future and would pimp that right now!

Can't wait to see the Subaru version! Maybe it will be 4WD? That would catch my attention!

Well ... it might be quicker than a V6 Challenger or turbo4 Genesis (though it should handle better than either). V6 Camaros, Mustangs, and Genesises (Genesi?) shouldn't have too much of a problem with them though. But those cars aren't what its supposed to compete against so it doesn't really matter. In fact, it should pretty much have its segment to itself. Nearest competitor (besides its Subaru cousin) would be what, the RX8? Who else has a ~3000 lb rwd 4 seater that doesn't cost much?
Oh, and I think its ugly.

This platform is Impreza derived and as such is at best no more a dedicated platform than the one underpinning the Mustang. Further, unique or not Toyota is going to attempt to market a smaller than Mustang, rwd, four cylinder, 200hp, 2+2 for V-6 Mustang money at best. Many of the rumors indicate that this car will cost more than that.
I just don't see the market clamoring for these at that price point. Give this thing a TC-esque price tag and they would fly off lots at the speed of light and you could count me among the very interested. At four to five grand more than that, I don't like it's chances. |

The aftermarket potential just isn't there with an n/a boxer imo. It needs a turbo. A single turbo setup would be a nightmare to design for the aftermarket, any kind of head or cam work will require removing the engine with a hoist, so the bolt ons better do well or it's just worthless imo.
