why doesn't the 2011 Camaro have a crash test rating?
Just wondering.... The 2010 had a 4-star frontal/side and 5-star roll over rating from the NHTSA and no rating from the IIHS. The 2011 was never re-rated and now there is no star rating at all for 2011 except for roll over. What's up with that? somebody pay off NHTSA not to rate the car? haha?

NHTSA specifies the criteria for the regulations that the manufacturers have to conform to. IIHS is operated by the insurance industry because they believe (and in many cases rightfully so) that the NHTSA test criteria are crap. IIHS therefore selects what they want to test. In short, every vehicle sold in the US is tested per NHTSA regulations, but not per IIHS. FMVSS214 (or was it 208?) specified frontal crashes at full head on into a concrete barrier at 35mph. The IIHS said, "Bullcrap, who crashes like that?" So they created their own test which they think is more realistic, front end offset on driver side at 40mph to simulate 2 cars opposite directions with one drifting across center line. This is from my former life as passenger safety engineer for a tier 1 supplier in the 90s.

I believe that if there are no major changes for the new model year, the manufacturer isn't required to retest.

I don't think that's the case though. They removed the frontal and side crash test ratings, but left the rollover rating. This would lead me to believe that there was no change in rollover protection but GM did change something for side/frontal impact for 2011 and this is why it's no longer rated. I was hoping to get some insight from an industry insider as to how the system works.
For example, look at the Ford Mustang, the body was the same 2006-2009, and every year is rated: http://www.safercar.gov/Vehicle+Shop...=MUSTANG&year=
