Drag Racing Lightweight Wheel and Tire Combo

I do a decent amount of drag racing but also like to be able to drive to the track on my combo, out to shows, hangounts ect... on the same set of wheels and tires. Lets face it stock Wheels are heavy as heck and a 20 inch rim leaves little sidewall flex. I also did not want to break the bank. Alex at Speed Depot was able to hook me up w/ the right combo. Great guy to work with and an excellent price.

I went w/ the TSW Nurburgring. I wante to go as light as possible and still retain the weights on my calipers to preventthe high speed hard breaking shimmy. I ended up w/ 19x8 on the front w/a +35 offset shod in a Perelli245/50r19 Pzero Nero. With 18`s up front you have to lose the caliper weights. In the Rear I chose 18x9.5 wheels w/ a +40mm offset shod w/ a Nitto P305/45zr18 NT05 drag Radial. I saved 44 total pounds of rotational mass while keeping rolling resistance/ w/ stock width up front and close to stock with on the back as low as possible. This is after all a drag setup for me. 9.5lbs were saved on each front wheel and tire mounted and balanced as opposed to the stock wheel and tire. On the rear I saved 12.5lbs each. Not too bad and it didn`t break the bank.

Sweet. The polished looks nice! The combo works great for my bolt-on car (with 555R's), and the NT05R's ought to work great for you.

Caliman,
Not sure if they have 17`s I know that w/ 18`s up front you have to lose the caliper weights or roller skates if you have them. Thats why I went 19 on the front. I think 17`s might work on the rear, possibly. Send Alex at speed depot a pm 2nd post thats who I got them from.

69rebel,
The NT05r are a much stickier tire than the 555R`s. The NT05r`s are like the mickey thompsons, real sticky no treadwear rating and are no good in the rain. But they dead hook, 1.6x 60 foots w/ no spin at all at the track. The 555r`s I had had a mixed bag of occasionally hooking and sometimes not. However the 555`s last a lot longer and can be driven in the rain.

Padre,
Thanks bro!

Alex,
Thanks again for the help!!

GMRULZ,

Have you done any passes with the new setup? I currently have the 555r's on 18's and I'm also having a hard time hooking. Any thoughts to why you chose the Nitto's over M&H and MT.

You can't hook an 18" drag radial? Thats wierd. I hooked the shit out of an 18" 275 M & H drag radial. Try some more heat or a better track. You want to go on Sat to Lebanon? Maybe heads up for some lunch money?!

As Mike stated the 555r is hit and miss. The decent passes I have with them I had to shut down for previously being warned for going faster then 11.5. You going to have that rocket ready for the 27th.

The ole rocket is ready now. I'm taking it out in street trim (3.4 pulley) on Sat to Lebanon to do some logging for Ted. Not looking to go crazy fast. Just a couple of 10.0 - 10.3 passes. Maybe at the rental I'll pulley down and see what happens. This engine still has limited miles on it and Ted wants to fine tune the shifting. Plus on Saturday it'll be hard to make many passes but this is my only day available before the 27th. And I am trying out some 17" MT ET 2 dr's so I have no idea what's gonna happen. So forseeing any big problems, prob just the stock driveshaft twisting, no worries, the one piece is on its way, I'll be there at the rental.

Usually a drag setup just looks odd, but this is like a strangely nice mid range.

I have dead hooked every time w/ these new tires 2 weeks ago, had trans shifting issues w/ the new gear (3:70`s) though and didn`t get a new best. no hit or mis anymore. My buddy came over yesterday and we dropped the commnaded shift point 200rpm from 1-2shift an 100rpm lower for commanded 2-3shift. Car w/ the blower and the gear just spins up to quick for the tranny to react in time w/ the previous settings. The 555r`s to me aren`t a true drag radial but are a good mix of a summer tire and drag radial. No real reason I chose the Nitto NT05R`s over the MT`s which I love and the M&H. I felt any of the 3 would get the job done.

SUX2BU,
No, I don`t daily drive it but you can get the same size tire I believe in a 555R drag radial and it is a good daily driver tire on the same wheel combo.

Agreed. I haven't taken my 555r's off since the first trip to the track two months ago. I figure they're good for 100 passes and 8k+ miles.
