How about they just de-stroke an LS3 to 302.

I think it was just the GMPP hot cam that they used, along with GMPP headers but I'm not positive. They did say that it makes 524 hp.

Well ... they could do that. Or just stay with their standard displacement and make more power and more torque, resulting in a faster car with no weight or handling penalty.

524HP!!! Then I say use an emissions ready SSX LS3 and detune it to around 465-475hp. The addition of street legal, emissions ready exhaust should take a pretty decent chunk out of that 524hp so a mild detune would only be required...

Sorry old thread but yea its a GM cam... But DEF think they should make the Z28 a street friendly version of the SSX

A lot of people try to pinpoint the "lineage" or "character" of the Z28 and the truth is, history is ripe with inconsistencies. The 1st gen Z28 was less powerful but higher-winding and more of a road race setup than the SS.

The 2nd gen somewhat followed suit but the Z28 got bigger, more powerful, went to a 350, and then the emissions doldrums of the mid to late 70s took full effect. The more powerful SS went away during this era and didn't come back.

The thirdgen saw the Z28 and IROC-Z carrying 305s and 350s; there was no SS. The Z28 with the right gearing and options was the quickest package and the best handling, and the performance started to meet and surpass the golden era of 67-72. A Z28 1LE was very true to the 1st gen spirit of the Z/28.

The fourthgen really muddied the waters; the Z28 continued the trend of the thirdgen quite successfully until the SS showed up. Now you had the Z28 SS, and that was the best performing, handling Camaro.

If there's one consistency, it's that there's no consistency.

The fifthgen theme seems to be all about 1969 worship, so that would say a lighter weight, track oriented car with a free-revving and spirited motor. Displacement doesn't matter as long as the motor has the character of the DZ302. As a former C6Z06 owner I can tell you the LS7 is a fast and free-revving motor in a lightweight, smallblock package. It and the LS6 are modern engines that best encapsulate that 69 Z/28 character in my opinion. I think an LS3 with a very mild hot cam, slightly higher rev limit, and some components to make it a little more free-revving will also suit the bill. Lighten the ride, big brakes, 18" lightweight wheels (20s are for the Caprices ), stiffer suspension, lower the amount of available optional stuff and we're good to go.

Oh, and offer a dark forest green with white stripes.

ZL1 they beefed suspension up..
If they make ZL1 the road course car..
they can make the Z28 the drag car..
LSX454 making 700HP NA add carbon fiber or fiberglass hood and fender to take a little bit of weight off front..
setup rear to fit 345s and sell it with NT05Rs 315s then people can upgrade to wider tires if they want..

Gwah? GM will absolutely never ever turn the Z28 into their drag king. Not. Gunna. Happen. They can make the ZL1 the top dog in all respects if they want (I remember hearing that the originals handled better than SS's too). I believe Fbodfather said something along the lines of "we won't sell a Z28 that doesn't deserve the name". Selling the Z28 as a drag car goes 100% completely against its road racing heritage

IMVHO - LS7 is the best LS' motor to get the nod. I think many people forget these cars have to pass smog, and I'm sure those LSX engines stand a way less chance at passing smog than LS7. In addition, I don't expect anything with an iron block to be installed in Z28 because of weight. I would really look toward an existing LS' production engine.

I totally agree with never gonna happen! As far as the original ZL1 handling better than the SS, may have been so, but neither handled as well as the original Z/28s, the ZL1 back then was too "nose heavy" with the 427 BB (same thing with the 396 BB SS) and even the SS350 SBC back then did not have a good enough suspension to compete with the Z/28 on handling.

The engine in the ZL1 BB weighed about the same as the SB. The ZL1 if I remember was basically a SS396 (375hp) with the engine swap and front spring change due to the lighter engine - aluminum.

You are correct on the ZL1 engine weight (plus or minus a couple of pounds), that does not change the fact that the SS350, ZL1 and BB SS396/427 did not have a suspension equal to the task of handling like a Z/28 back then.

I agree it should be a zippier motor to stay with the original concept.
It's not easy or cheap to do though. It has to have close to the same power, more would be better. 5.7L 7300 rpm with 450hp?
Destroked 6.3 as mentioned, with a wilder cam.
Oh, and the car should be 200lbs less.

I say go with a FI smaller displacement aluminum V8 in the 4 litre range. Talk about different, talk about weight reduction, talk about domination....there you go.

Forced induction & weight reduction don't go together. And cutting the cube's won't really save any weight. For example the 4.0L V8 that BMW developed for its M3 was praised for how light they managed to make it, a bit under 440 lbs I do believe. Thing is, it still weighs more than an LS3.

Easy.... 427ci LS7, dry sump. But the Z28 would have to be soo much more than a better engine... lighter, better suspension parts, better tires... if not, it will fail to the ZL1 AND Boss 302. I hope they make a winner though!!

They need to put in the 427 LS7 motor in the Z28.
