Rust on new exhaust tips - normal, possible, insane?

Looked down today, both brand new Stainless Steel tips I had put on about a month ago, covered in rust. This is AFTER I hard scrubbed them with WD40 and a microfiber. That's what I couldn't get off.

So, question is - is this normal, possible but rare, insane that it's even happening, etc?

Either way, pisses me off.

They are Magnaflow 35177 tips.

Updated with clear pics.

I don't think real stainless steel rusts. I could be wrong but I thought that was the point of buying stainless steel especially on salt water boats.

It shouldnt rust depending on what was used. 409, 304 or whatever.
I would be pissed, call Magnaflow

I think it *can rust, but it shouldn't this quickly, from what I understand.

Either these were bootleg Magnaflows sold by Amazon directly, OR, something is off here.

Updated with better pics.

Uh Oh! Those are my tips as well!

Cept I've had mine for a long time now...at least a year to a year and a half with no rusting. (they still look great!) But then again, my car does not play in the rain...just in the sun. I do have to clean the exhaust soot off them all the time but thats normal.

Sucks to hear that news.

Yeah, well, I park outside and drive in the rain. Still though, I wouldn't think this should happen after 1 month of wear and tear. I drive it like 3 times a week locally, max. Longer trip once a month. Not like I'm beating on them.

Something else I noticed, is your magnaflow label appears to be yellow. Is that from the rust? Mine are not that way...the magnaflow label is polished.

I think that's just the light actually, I believe they are beveled steel color. But, will need to check again.

I gave them a call. Said not normal, to email them pics, manager will look on Monday and decide if it should be replaced. Was nice, but didn't have power to make decision.

Just went and checked. There is some layered form of something there, ink or vinyl or whatever you would layer on top of steel, for the logo. It's a brownish yellow, but not rust. It's not a steel bevel.

By looking at the picture it is obvious that you have some pit corrosion on the surface. This is very difficult to remove! Some of the 304 stainless steel on the market today is not very good, but all 304SS is subject to corrosion in chloride atmospheres. Good lots of 304 should withstand the conditions you mention.

By pit corrosion - do you mean dent/knicks that pushed through the top layer and started rusting? Or something else? I am not familiar with the term.
