Stress Cracked Windshield

I was washing my SS last weekend and I noticed a 4 or 5" crack in the windshield starting from the bottom on the passenger side just under the wiper. At first I got pretty angry at myself for not noticing a chip that had turned into a crack but on closer inspection there was no chip. I couldn't feel any rouch or raised surface on the outside OR inside of the glass.

Just took the car to the dealership this afternoon (Markville Chevy in Markham Ontario) to see what they thought hoping they were going to say it was a stress crack and praying when I pulled in they wouldn't try to tell me it was the vibration from my exhaust. To my surprise (it was a nice one) I was there for all of about 5 minutes before the service manager told me he was ordering a new windshield and would call me next week when it came in.

So two reasons for posting this....

one, has anyone else found stress cracks in their windshileds? I'm just curious to see if it's a semi common problem.

and two, to share a possitive dealer experience on this forum. I think it's nice to read them every once in a while.

it is not uncommon. I notice a 1" crack from day 1 right in the middle of the windshield but didn't really pay much attention to it at the time because it looked like a strand of spider web and only visible at certain angles and lighting. Well, weeks past and after a wash, it was still there, rubbed it and won't come off. It was in the glass. Took car to dealer, dealer said it was an impact crack, gave me the number to their glass guy, went to see the dealers glass guy, after running the edge of a razor blade across the crack, glass guy said "this is definitely not from a rock or whatever, there is no impact sign, this is a defective glass or a stress fracture." I went back to the dealer, told them what their glass guy said, dealer said, "no, this looks like a rock hit your windshield it is not a stress crack because those happen at the corners and edges of the glass.." at that point, I realized I was dealing with morons. I haven't done anything about the crack but it hasn't progressed at all. I remember seeing a TSB or dealer PIP about it. The dealer should be aware of this issue now.

The night of the day I brought my car home, the back window blew out of it. Still don't know why and 5,000 km later, it's still okay.

Dealer replaced it under warranty!

Thanks!

This is what a couple of the glass shops in Calgary said as well. They also said they run into it quite frequently.

Most insurance covers windshield replacement for free, ibthought.

Know that's the case in FL.

well not all states do, us in michigan have a deductible claim were we pay 50,100,200,250,500,or even 1,000 first and the insurance covers the rest, so it is good that they took care of it..

Have you had your vehicle checked at another dealership to see what they have to say about the crack yet? Also have you tried speaking with Customer Assistance on this? Thank you for your time. windzurfer, I hope your dealer is able to take care of you as well.

Those of you that are seeing the cracks, are you spirited drivers and really cranking in the corners?

I just noticed today that I have a stress crack at the bottom on the driver's side under the inspection sticker. I will say I haven't noticed it and today I was on back roads pushing the car some... it was a very curvy road... wonder if that had anything to do with it

windshields should not crack so easily even with spirited driving. in order for the windshield to crack the car had to flex from the torque, stock vehicles should not have this problem. i think the flexing of these cars is causing the windshield probs as well as the dimples so many talk about on the tops of their fenders/rear quarters.

I had a rock fly up and hit my windshield. You couldn't feel it at all on the outside as you rubbed it with your finger, but you could see it. It was in the blacked out area where the rear view mirror is mounted.

Insurance took care of that. I never knew there were issues with the windows installed initially on the car.
