Potential Group Buy: Front (and rear?) lightweight crash support bumpers

As we all know the 5th gen is pretty heavy and most of us are trying to lose weight when it is possible. Not sure if all of you are following the amazing work the Moreno brothers are doing (if not check out these two threads)

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=188393

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=285800

In their build they replaced their front crash support bumper with a lightweight fabricated one in the picture below.

The company that fabricated his http://hmracingdesign.com/ has agreed to make some for us as long as we can get a group buy going. If we can get atleast 5 people interested in the front bar it will be $250 but if we can get 10 people on board it would be $189 also if we can get 10 people interested in the rear bar it will be $214. So with 10 people the total price for both bars would be $403.

In the event of a collision, this piece will react differently than the factory crash support which is designed to crumple upon impact. Mild Steel will have a tendency to bend a bit, but it will also transfer much more energy into the frame than the factory piece. For this reason, I am very hesitant to recommend something like this for a daily driven vehicle. These are best used in off-road applications.

If that hasn't scared you off, then here is some more about the crash support

They will be made from 1.75" OD mild steel, mig welded on .125" plates. Weight of front is 7 lbs, rear 10 lbs (give or take a few oz's).

A smaller crash support also means less obstruction, and allows more airflow into the radiator.

We have become good friends with Kevin, the owner of HM racing design, and he is mostly doing this as a favor to us and our community, as his normal business is in building trophy trucks and pre runners.

As of right now the plan is to ship them in raw metal, however, if there is enough interest, I suppose we can get them all powder coated, in the same color, at an extra cost.

Let me know what you guys think...
OEM Weight: Front --> 14lbs Rear --> 27lbs
These: Front -->7lbs Rear --> 10lbs

If you are interested let me know and I will add you to the list.

I believe it is just as strong as the factory piece, it is the same material that the roll cages are made out of. Not completely sure about the airbags.

I'll see if I can find out for sure.

Put me down for a front, and let me know what they say on the rear bar. I'll take mine in whatever finish is easiest/cheapest, if I really want it changed, I'll have it powdercoated or painted later.

Thanks for the info Justin! I would prefer if mine wasn't powdercoated but that is me personally. Thank you so much for your help in making this happen I know I greatly appreciate it!

Why worry about coating a part that people will never see?

Stylish when crashed?

I personally don't want added cost

I'd also be interested in a rear bar if we get to go that route.

Kj, I spoke with Kevin and he said to just add $25 for the rear bar. So if we can get 10 orders for the rear bar, it's only $214.

Can you post a copy of this thread in the drag racing section. I think theres a lot of guys who frequent that section but don't as much here.

Happy New Year's to all.
