Mobile Detailing - Tipping?

Hey guys - got a guy coming out to detail my car tomorrow and wasn't sure what was proper etiquette in regards to tipping - do they rely on tips?

Does he own his own business or works for someone/Corp. Entity? It's odd on what is considered proper etiquette...I don't tip my plumber but movers i certainly do.

Yah, if he is the owner I would not tip him, but if he is just a employee I would tip him

No tip if the person owns the business, but tip if the person is an employee. Give him the beer after the job.

Even of it's his business I'd throw a few extra $$$ IF the job is well done.

Tipping usually doesn't hurt. Especially if you think you'll have him out again.

I'll put in a pre-emptive post assuming the OP will post.

How much or what percent should I tip if I do?

Not only would I tip, I would put this guy on the Christmas bonus list just like someone you use all the time like someone who cuts your hair. That's only if this works out and you keep using him.

Tip just like at a restaurant - 15 or 20%. At end of year, it's equal to one month's service.

If he does a great job and if I was satisfied, I wouldn't mind tipping. I think he would appreciate it and try to do an even better job next time.

I am a detailer of 20 plus years and am the only one pocketing the dough when i do someones car and it isnt uncommon to get 10 bucks extra on a job well done. I would have to ask you this though, what is he charging you? how dirty is the car?
I only charge people like 60 bucks for a wash wax vacuum windows door jambs clean center councel door pockets trunk etc. basically everything but the engine bay. i will do the engine if it needs it. on special cars like camaro or challenger i am extra picky but usually i can do everything in 2 hours. I usually charge about 30 bucks an hour on jobs. I am extremely thorough and effeciant with my time. what i do in 2 hours would take the owner half a day to do.

Base your tip on his work, and not just the obvious work, check the door jams, trunk jams, all the PIA places. Then also figure out how much per hour he is actually making from you, if it's low then a tip is in order for a good job. Just remember if you tip him this time and not next time he will think you screwed him the second time.
