ZL1...Will it have a Gas Guzzler Tax?

I'm assuming that the 2012 ZL1 will have a Gas Guzzler tax as the Cadillac CTS V does! What do you think?

I really hope so. I just love paying more taxes. All kidding aside, I would say it's a pretty safe bet that it will at least in the automatic version.

Yes, indeed, Yes, I think this is a given. I would think that there's no way around it. But it depends on the blower staying in bypass mode and out of the boost longer during testing but that's just my hope that it does make it without a tax.

Well if it does have gas guzzler tax that's a lot of money on the price that is already suspected to be above the current Shelby's.

I think we have a chance of not getting a gas guzzler tax because they absolutely neeeeed to compete with the Shelby's. If you buy an auto with gas guzzler tax that's 2k on top of the price right there!

It won't matter about the price comparison with the Shelby....it will have to do with the EPA gas mileage requirerments!

It the ZL1 can match the 15/23 mpg of the 2011 GT500, I guess it could avoid the gas guzzler tax as well... Seems unlikely though

ZR1 has one, I think it is safe to assume so will the ZL1, unfortunately.

Money is money, but I think the point really is mute considering.
It really dont matter how much it is, as those that want and can afford (or not afford for that matter) the ZL1 will buy it no matter the cost.

I'm betting yes, too. Even with the EPS, I think the chances are small it won't apply. It would be GREAT, but my hopes aren't high.

You gotta' pay to play

If a difference of $2k is swaying somebody's decision on this car, they are cutting it too close to the limit to be looking at this car to begin with.

What I don't understand is, guys bolting on a supercharger to the LS3/L99 engine and it either maintains or gets better gas mileage, but the LSA engine is slated for less? Am I missing something....

I expect that it will probably get hit with a $1000 gas guzzler tax (the lowest bracket) and possibly $1300. To avoid it, it would need to meet or beat the GT500 in fuel economy and I just don't see that happening.

Usually, when someone puts a supercharger onto their car they're not going to mess with the compression ratio. This does 3 things:
  1. It more or less maintains fuel economy during normal driving. Good
  2. It produces more power for a given boost level. Better.
  3. It makes the engine more prone to catastrophic failure. Uh oh.
GM is far more worried about #3 than 1 & 2, so they (along with every other automaker) build their forced induction engines with lower the compression ratio to more boost friendly levels on, usually something like 9:1 instead of say 11:1

All you people worried about the gas guzzlet tax...Just go buy a lower performing car! To get the performance to stomp the GT500 it will have the tax. Deal with it or move on to a cheaper car.

If you're bitching about $1000-$2500 extra for the ZL1, you can't afford it so move on.
