Curious to know if there are any Camaro owners out there that are part-time or full-time sports officials? I, myself am a basketball official. I officiate youth leagues, mens' leagues, and am also a UIL high school official.

Show some love to the refs! We do it for the love of the game and for the kids...

Ahhhh Yeahhhhh!!! The Mid-America Youth Basketball (MAYB) Texas State Tournament is going on this weekend in San Antonio, Texas. I'll be officiating 20 (YES, Two-Zero) basketball games this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the 9th-10th Grade Girls' Division.
Needless to say....I will be very tired after this is over!!

Thanks! Yep! I know what you mean about the "hop skip" or "bunny hop" as I've heard it called at times. Good thing this time is that the girls don't do as bad as the boys do. These youngsters are coming out with way too many street ball moves!

It's weird that when I watch a basketball game on television, whether it's NBA, WNBA, NCAA, or High School, I'm always checking out the officials and critiquing their calls, mechanics, etc.

Survived Friday and Saturday night! 13 games down...7 games tomorrow, including the Championship Game at 4PM. Boy, I'm tellin' ya....fans, parents, coaches, players....they never cease to amaze me how they all think they can be referees as well...That's how it goes and That's What We Do!!! Peace!!

I used to ref for hockey games, had some fun times. It's a lot harder than people think though, especially in hockey where you can get hit with a random flying puck at any given moment.

Yeah, I think I'll stick to basketball, where it is a little more safe. I've considered doing football at the high school level, but for now, basketball it is.

The STC Basketball Camp is going great! One more day tomorrow...there are alot of good evaluators at the camp to give me feedback on the things I need to work on to be a better official..

Though I haven't done it in a few years, I umpired baseball for about 6 years. Did it for a youth baseball league, was umping on weekends and playing in games during the week.

Okay, so for all of you out there that have been or are a sports official such as myself, here is a tip that I'm sure you have heard before from other officials...."Never engage with a fan. It's not worth it." As you know, as a sports official, you have to have a thick skin and discipline yourself not to let your emotions get the best of you. But, officials are human too. We hear it all the time from coaches, players, and fans. The point of this is that I lost my cool two weekends ago and got into it with a parent/fan. Nothing physical, just verbal jabs. I did 4 games this past Saturday and made it a point to remain calm and just do my job. And I did!!

Cool! I got a late start in my officiating career, but I enjoy doing it and I see it as providing a community service to our youth. If someone ever tells you that officiating is easy, then they just don't know..

My Chapter starts training for the upcoming high school season beginning this Saturday at Somerset High School. This will be going on for the next 9 weekends. I also have a mens' league starting up on September 24th. It's going to get busy in ref land!!

I have been reffing high school basketball for over 20 years. Been all over the country - currently in Dallas. I'm a mild mannered person in real life, but a completely different persona comes out when I ref. I take no crap from anyone. Love the game and it allows me to be a part of it. Looking forward to the season starting in a couple months. Texas has some great basketball.

In my Chapter, we go by Divisons. A rookie ref is a Divison 5. I'm currently a Division 4 official. I've been assigned some varsity level games, but mostly jr. high, freshmen, and JV.

This is only going to be my 3rd season at the high school level. It's funny because I'm just like you, a mild-mannered, calm guy during the day and at the office, but when you put me on the hard court, you better come to play and respect the game and the officials. We don't take no mess! LOL Hopefully, I'll get more varsity assignments and maybe even some Playoff games. Cheers!

Don't be in too much of a rush to move up the ladder. The higher the level the faster you will have to react and the more skilled the players are, the more likely you will be to anticipate what's going to happen and not see plays through and judge advantage/disadvantage. Not to mention how to deal with coaches effectively. I'm still learning a lot after 20+ years. Experience is everything.
