They don't have to, it's a fleet standard or average.

thank you. So many people don't realize that CAFE is for the average fuel economy for a company's entire line

It never ended Ferrari, Porsche, and Maseratis from selling cars in the US. They just pay the penalty.
"A number of manufacturers choose to pay CAFE penalties rather than attempt to comply with the regulations. As of model year 2006, BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Volkswagen, Ferrari, Porsche and Maserati failed to meet CAFE requirements.[24]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corpora...e_Fuel_Economy |

Plus US companies can get "fuel credits" that are rewarded by the government from building hybrids and alternative vehicles which also increase their fleet average. MB went out and invested in those little golf carts that are street legal, which sent their fleet average through the roof. That's how they build a AMG that gets 12/16, and pay no penalties. Plus its all political anyways, so it really never matters.

It is worth pointing out that CAFE is weighted by production. For instance, the Corvette affects GM far less than the Cruze because GM produces and sells fewer Corvettes than Cruzes. As a consequence, the Cruze helps GM more than the Corvette hurts GM.

But on the other hand, The camaro could have a real impact in the average with the production numbers they've been putting up.

Exactly. People can say it's an average all they want, but that is a huge number. There aren't any cars today that are even getting that number on the highway, other than hybrid's.

Well, lots of good information shared here. Sounds like the CAFE standard for 2010 was 27.5 when the Gen5 came out. So between the V6 and V8 it was right around the targeted average. The average for 2015 is 36.7. That's going to take a much lighter body and more fuel efficiency.
Maybe someone could do the math and estimate the mpg using todays engines but on a 3,200 lb. frame versus a 3,700 lb. frame.

End of Camaro as we know it?
With the new Government standards starting in 2017 will this kill the supposed new 6th Gen Camaro? At 54 mpg even with some really high mpg cars to balance out the lower mpg cars the end of the big V8 is very near. I will be keeping my 5th Gen car forever now. Chevrolet would keep the Corvette as it's low mpg car for performance and drop the Camaro.

54 MPG will never actually go through by 2025, because sanity will eventually prevail.
Second, CAFE has so many loopholes, you don't actually need 54 MPG to say you get 54 MPG. For example, I've heard that a Suburban already gets about 35 MPG.

to be honest, if there is a market for it, there is no way manufacturers will stop selling V8s. Yes they will get more expensive, but you know what, it's all about priorities in life. If you really want the V8 be prepared for the $20/gal gas in 2025 and stiff guzzler taxes as well.

I'd worry a lot more about the gm engineers throwing out junk and the damn bean counters destroying the camaro with the 6th-7th gen than i would the government enforcing those new regulations any where near 2025.

well let me ask you this, how much did gas cost 15 years ago? Under $1 right? Well we're 4x that now. This is the new low. Mark my words. multipy by 4 again you get 16. close enough to $20 for me. Even if that doesn't happen. It'll definitely be at least double what we're paying now. I don't know a single 15 year period in which gas didn't at least double in price.

Hopefully they will find a way to mass market the Volt. I won't buy one, but the Camaro needs the Volt and others like it to ensure longevity.
