According to this article the new generation Camaro expected to be out either model year 2014 or 2015 will feature GM's new Eight-Speed Automatic Transmission.

Figure on GM's eight-speed to make its way into the new Alpha platform rear-drive cars, which start with the ATS-codename 2013 Cadillac 3 Series-fighter, the 2014 Cadillac CTS and the 2015 Chevy Camaro. The transmission could work in all but high-torque versions of GM's pickups and sport/utilities, as well.

GM is the inventor of the mass-market fully automatic transmission, with varying gear counts through the years. A brief look at the history shows that what the new eight-speed needs more than anything is a cool, post-modern name. In the past there have been:

Hydramatic: four speeds, launched in 1940 Oldsmobiles. It was redesigned for the 1956 model year with a sprag clutch and a secondary fluid coupling, and discontinued after 1964.

Dynaflow: two speeds, 1948 to 1964 Buicks. GM's second fully automatic transmission.

Powerglide: two speeds, 1950 to 1973 Chevrolets, including the 1971-73 Vega.

Jetaway: two speeds, 1964-69 Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Buick midsizecars.

Roto-Hydramatic: three speeds, 1961 to 1964 Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles.

Turbo-Hydramatic: three speeds, launching in high-torque V-8 powered models from all divisions in 1965. By the '70s, it was GM's mainstream automatic, and it evolved into a four-speed automatic. It is used in some GM models to this day.

This makes you wonder about the future of manuals. It's hard enough now for a M6 to keep up with an A6. Imagine trying to shift 8 gears.

But then I didn't think I'd like a M6 after having a DD 30 years ago with a 4speed stick. I absolutely love the gearing of my M6. You gotta believe the manual isn't going past 6 gears.

You know what would be cool, if you could program your transmission like a TV and be able to skip gears like you skip channels. That'd be interesting !!!!!!!!! It certainly makes more sense once you get into these number of gears.

My 87 corvette had the 4+3 manual, you had an overdrive gear for 2,3,4 gears. I would drive it 1,2,3,4 then overdrive on 4th. OR you could drive it 1,2, overdrive,3, overdrive,4, overdrive. Very confusing.

I know a guy that had one of those. He had a hell of a time getting someone to rebuild it correctly. As soon as it was fixed, he sold the P.O.S.

I've got a Motor Trend from fall of 1984, first review of IROC-Z. my dad bought it. They mention it only comes with an auto and say if someone 'sat down to design a modern transmission it probably wouldn't come out as a manual"

My first car was a four speed Z28. I have to say that I liked it much better than the M6. I rarely go past 4th gear unless I'm on the highway.

Drove an IS-F awhile back, which also has 8 gears, and let me tell you. That's just too damned much shifting. Not a fan.

Why not a 10 or 15 speed transmission.

Agreed, 8 gears seems like a lot of shifting/more ratios than you would need, particularly on an engine with a lot of torque. Hopefully this isn't a hint at future engine choices.

If your going for straight line performance yeah the auto is faster period. But nothing will replace the fun and passion of a manual. And just to let you know, the 2012 911 is going to have a 7 speed manual. Just imagine having a T56 with a gear between 5 and 6 NICE!! the 7th gear is just going to be an overdrive.

Imagine trying to shift 8 gears. But then I didn't think I'd like a M6 after having a DD 30 years ago with a 4speed stick. I absolutely love the gearing of my M6.
