Exclamation Spied: Camaro ZL1 Track Package / High Performance Package In Testing?!

Featured on Camaro5 HOMEPAGE.

The 2012 Camaro ZL1 is not yet released to market (expected Spring 2012), but it appears that a Track Package or High Performance Package is already being tested for the ZL1!

The biggest telltale sign is the prototype's more aggressive hood cowl, featuring an actual induction scoop/inlet. The regular Camaro ZL1 cowl features only heat extractors, but no air intake/inlet for extra cooling and air induction.

This prototype also features Sparco race seats and a rollcage, which could be installed for testing purposes only, but nevertheless could be potential components in some ZL1 track pack option.

Don't mind the door decal, as these types of decals have been spotted on previous ZL1 prototypes, and are used as camouflage and to deceive.

Stay tuned for more info as we get it!

So now I have to wait for this to be announced if it isn’t available when they open 2012 ordering? This is what I was worried about – the 2013 model comes out and it has something I really want that improves the performance but I already have the 2012. Just when I thought I was getting close to ordering a ZL1….

AH!!!! I CALLED IT LIKE MONTHS AGO!!!

And - that's SO killer!!! I just got chills! I wonder what tires we'll find?... Maybe some Sport Cups a la ZR1/Z06?...

How could you hide this from me, Tran? You know how obsessed I am

The vent confuses me... Will it still be effective at adding downforce? I know there's a scoop inside that would catch some air, but would this new forward-facing scoop at counter productively?... And - count me in on some hood pins!!! I'll take that black Bow Tie, too

Here are some tire photographs I'm drooling over. The first is the F1 G:2 we already know is coming on ZL1. The second is the Sport Cup tire found on ZR1. It's not a very clear picture, but either the shoulder's pretty bald or I think it's a strong suggestion they might be getting some seriously sticky tires!

Those wheels look different...like 10 spokes - there seems to be more airflow through the wheel...lighter weight than the ZL1 wheels? Perhaps THIS is the BOSS 302 competitor (WON'T SAY THE Z-WORD)?

Spoiler looks different...and those look like functional brake coolers on the back fenders....hmm.

These are MOST interesting posts!!! If I were excited before, the thought of the "other" Z-word makes me even more!

Maybe it's just the angle and camo' that seem like the wheels and spoiler look a little different. I'll be honest when I first saw the tires that they looked shorter... Not like the 28-inch tall tires I'm used to seeing. However, your last comment about the quarter vents interests me the most... Could it be that I will have to eat my words about functional rear brake ducts?... I will gladly eat some words and take one for the team if that could be a reality I maintain that I don't think it will happen, lol.

I think these are just the SSX wheels which are expected to be standard wheels on the ZL1, the polished wheels are rumored to be an option.

AHHHH I hope these are stage upgrades that you can get put on anytime! If they can be ordered only I'm going to be spending a lot more money then planned! Digging the hood!

You mean the taped over section? If that's what you mean I don't know - it is probably some data acquisition instrument like the ones taped all over the rest of the car. Donít get me wrong, Iíd love rear brake cooling ducts but to me this seems like an add on for testing.

Are we positive it has a supercharger under the hood? Could this be going for a new Z28 to compete with the Boss?

There will always be something better coming out. I'm sure the 2014 will be even better, and then the 2015 will be better than that. But why buy a 2015 when an all new model is coming out for 2016.

I was just thinking, Isn't it a little late in the game to be testing power upgrades this close to launch? maybe these are stage packages being tested for future release? or maybe this is a whole new car in itself (Z/28)? but to me it wouldn't seem right to let people know about a Z/28 before ZL1's are on the lots! that would hurt ZL1 sales don't you think?

I'm sort of confused about where the intake vent goes - directly to the air intake for the SC maybe? Not sure how the routing would work. Maybe it is just a Ram Air / CAI of sorts. I imagine a tunnel in the hood or below the hood to route the air to the intake.

I think this design would still produce downforce given the above assumptions - the downforce comes from release of pressure from under the car so I donít think this would change that too much. Man this is exciting.

Could be just me but when I zoom in on the tires they seem like the standard tread you show in the pictures. Maybe a photoshop expert could enhance the lighting to help us see the tread better?

Actually, this prototype has been in an accident. If you look closely, you can see that the entire panel right behind the passenger's door is dented. I think the black tape may just be part of the temporary patch job.

You are correct, but I can wait 6 months for the 2013 and see if this package comes to light (assuming it isnít on the í12). If there isnít news of it then, Iíll pull the trigger. People will wait years for the supposed Z28 which may not come back for 5+ years if then, so 6 more months doesnít seem that bad for something we already have pictures of. To me, once the ZL1 was announced, the hope for a 5th gen Z28 went way down. (That is, unless this is it.)

EXACTLY what I said they needed back in February -

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...ns#post2829196

Anything else you guys/gals want me to ask GM for? I am getting those HOOD PINS. They DO IMPLY MUSCLE - even if it is kind of retro.. it IS A NEcESSARY FEATURE for SERIOUS CONTENDERS on the track! Take it to the bank!

Looks like modified rear brake intakes to me.. a bit more BULGY and "scoopish" to me. And, possibly the ENTIRE hood will be Carbon Fiber and "lift off" only to save weight (no hardware)... Yes it could be ZL1 on a diet (with another revered name) with a naturally aspirated engine therefore needing more natural air intakes. Or could be the ZL1 "Package 2". My hope is that it is ZL1 Package 1 and all that stuff comes as entry level ZL1. No mods required! Thanks GM!

OMG as Elmer Fudd would say........
"This is getting veeewwwy intewesting"......
