L99 VVT CAM - tell me about your setup and results

After researching all the cams and options for my L99 I am considering a VVT cam. The LS3 conversion is not an option for me since I don't have $4K to spend. It appears that the VVT has proven to provide the most power for a stage I and stage II up to the 5100 rpm. A setup like this would cost me $1500 installed. I don't plan on adding a supercharger so I think this may be a good option for me. Has anyone experienced any issues with a VVT setup? I would be interested in hearing about your experience.

Also, please post video sound clip. I have had little luck finding them on Youtube.

dont know about the cam but the ls3 conversion would require replacing the 10.4 compression ratio pistons with 10.7 ones.thats what comes in a ls3...i see alot of people talking about LS3 conversions but think almost none have swapped out the pistons.....and that along with turning off the vfm is what it would take for a conversion.a L99 will always be a L99 without the piston swap..period

Doesn't VVT depend on changing the timing of the exhaust valves compared to the intake valves? More or less overlap?
I don't know how you could do this with one camshaft.

I am interested to know about vvt cams. Don't care about ls3 conversions but you're right, it wouldn't make your engine an ls3 if you converted as most people do.

If anyone has a vvt cam please share your thoughts.

I run a mast stage 1 VVT cam. Good low end power and lope. You will need an aftermarket torque converter though.

Very nice and thanks for the comment.

I see that you also have a supercharger. Do you know what your rwhp was with just the cam? Is it really necessary to have a torque converter with a stage 1?

Also, have you had any issues with the vvt cam? I heard there is a reliability concern. Thanks for the feedback.I appreciate it.

I believe it was 419 rwhp cam/bolt ons. You will need a converter, my car had wicked cam surge without it. I had a broken valve spring awhile back, not sure if that was a VVT issue.

Thanks! She gets up there. That was a couple pulleys ago.
Thanks again lexlueger, you've been very helpful. Now I need to find out what that converter will cost me installed. Would you be willing to share with me what you paid? You can pm me if you prefer. In any case sounds like it is needed regardless of what stage cam is in.

Can't tell you exactly what I paid because I had allot of work done at the same time. I went with the precision industries converter stalled @2400.

It is a very quick job with proper tools and a nice lift... but that also means labor isn't off the chart either...

I've researched the crap out of this trying to determine what route I want to take. I really really want to get rid of AFM. I'd love to run a VVT cam. As far as I know, the only guys doing VVT cams are MAST performance and Texas Speed. Both of which are well respected.

I've about decided I want to do a FULL AFM delete (replace lifters with LS7 lifters, replace valley pan with LS3 one, etc), and do a VVT cam.

In the LS pushrod V8 setup, VVT works by cam phasers and oil passages in the cam itself. It's pretty slick. Although with more aggressive cams, you have to swap out the cam phasers to limit the ammount of timing variation.

When people say LS3 conversion, they are talking heads only. Once you swap out all the necessary head parts, you can run any LS3 cam you want. It would be pointless to swap out pistons just to get 0.3 compression. So if a LS3 guy puts in the lower CR pistons from a L99, is he now a L99? If he puts in higher CR pistons, what is his designation then?
