That was all over the news here in MA.........he was a stowaway hiding in the landing gear then froze to death during the flight. He fell out when they lowered the landing gear in preparation to land.

Happened back in November of 2010....................

Yep, not too smart. I don't think people realize that the temps are 50-60 below zero up in the atmosphere.

I didn't realize it got that cold. Hell, I coulda made that same mistake. Of course my risk fears would be getting crushed by said landing gear or falling out when it opened from pasing out due to a lack of oxygen.

Of course I have no reason to stow away in the landing gear of a plane.

It is sad though. He was just a kid.

God knows what he was trying to do, maybe get away from his family or something? I don't find it funny at all, yeah the kid wasn't the brightest but who am I to judge him for not knowing it got cold? There's definitely a reason the kid was trying to fly away.

Very sad indeed. Freezing or falling; either one would be a horrible death. I also wonder why he needed to get away so badly.

It isn't the cold that will kill you. It's the lack of oxygen...

That's what I would figure.

Seems like someone frozen to death would be fairly easy to determine. The body would look horrible as far as the outerlayer of skin. More so than just a death 'consistant with a fall from a significant height'.

Cruising altitude for longer flights is 30,000 to 40,000 feet. Most commercial airlines cruise at anywhere from 25,000 to 40,000 feet.

The Time of Useful Consciousness is a function of altitude. At 20,000 feet, an average individual will have 5 to 12 minutes. At 25,000 feet, this time is reduced to 3 to 5 minutes. At 30,000 feet only 1 to 2 minutes are available. By 40,000 feet, the average individual will have only 9 to 15 seconds (basically this represents the oxygen that was in their system before the exposure to 40,000 feet).
