Small metal shavings in engine oil

Hey everyone,

After running 10 runs at the 1/4 mile drag strip last night I checked my oil this morning and found a few very small shiny metal shavings on my dipstick :( I'm wondering if this is a common occurrence or if this is something I should be very concerned about....idk if the shavings were there BEFORE I raced since I didn't bother checking the oil because I just changed it about 500 miles ago or so. I'm using 5w30 mobile 1 and an AC Delco oil filter.

Your thoughts?

Most likely from bearings, best way to know is to hold off on the track, pull an oil sample send it to a lab and let them determine what's going on.

Is it a brand new engine? If it is...I'd change the oil immediately and cut the filter open to see what's inside...how is your oil pressure, especially if you change from steady state (say holding 30 mph) to tipping into the throttle to accelerate...does pressure hold or fall?

If it's a new engine, I'd also call the builder ASAP and ask them what you need to do.

I had the same thing on my new SS. I checked the oil at 500 miles and had a bitch of a time pulling the dipstick in and out. Noticed some shaving on the dipstick as well. I am guessing it came from the dipstick tube itself since I could feel it drag as I pulled it out. You would think they could design it better not to be so friggen tight.

Metal shavings in any oil is not good, have it checked out ASAP.

The metal is generally from the dipstick tube internals. We have seen this for years.

A sure fire way to tell is to save those slivers to a napkin,Drain your oil and remove your filter,If the same slivers are in the filter you may have an issue.

I would put my money on the Internals of the dipstick tube being softer metal than the indicator itself sticking to the tip.

You can also send a 1 quart sample of your oil to blackstone labs and they tell you what is in it.

Good luck

+1. That's exactly what it looks like. And based on how the dipstick feels pulling in and out makes perfect sense. A bit scary at first.

Thanks for your suggestions/input everyone. I ordered a Gold Plug yesterday so hopefully it will come in very soon. I'll be draining the oil into a clean containter and fishing around with a magnet to find any other particles as well as cutting the filter open. I'm so close to ordering a Magnuson S/C from Jannetty too! Figures life would throw me a curve ball right before ordering!

So I finally drained the oil and combed through it using 5 magnets and didn't find a trace of metal shavings. I also cut the filter open and didn't find anything there either. Sure enough, as ADM Performance hinted, the tip of the dipstick is worn down a bit causing small metal shavings to appear on the dipstick when checking oil. Crappy design! Thanks for the help ADM

That likely would have terrified me. Glad it was nothing serious.
