Gears and RWHP

I have done alot of reading and see that 3.73's are recommended for the A6 and 4.10's for the M6. My question is at what power does those recommendations no longer make sense? I dont want to put 4.10's in my car just to find out that my first gear is basically useless. I currently have 465 rwhp and my goal is for around the 500 mark. Does 4.10's still make sense for this level of power or should i look into a set of 3.90's instead?

Pete, it depends on how you drive the car. Do you go to the drag strip? 1/4 mile or 1/8? Do you have a long highway commute?

I have 4.10s and 4.11s. I feel it is perfect for this car. With it cooling down a bit now, I do have a little traction issue at full throttle above 5k rpm. However, I am still on the stock Pzeros. If I had DRs, it would be a nonissue. You canot go wrong with 3.90, 4.10 or 4.11.

That is the truest answer you could get. It's hard to just blanket answer something like this without more info. Higher HP numbers are probably going to make you want to dial the gear back, but again it can't really be an accurate answer without knowing your goal?

Perfect is how we would say most would describe the switch to 4.10/4.11 in the M6.

Unless you're running out of RPM in a certain gear at the track with the 4.10s, I'd recommend them over the 3.90s as you won't be able to notice the difference otherwise imho.

We have been putting the 3.45s in the A6 Cars for a long time now and would only recommend 3.91 or 4.11 gears aftermarket.

What do you recommend for someone finishing in 3rd gear at 6200 rpm's in a M6? I just don't know which way to go on gears? I know what squintz is talking about and he probably knows how I drive better than most people LOL! I do want to be able to commute on the freeway for long trips and want to eventually run the Texas Mile, but feel the car needs a little more in the 1/4 mile! 3.73 or 3.91's?

Ace, for you 3.91s or 4.11s, you need some gear with that cam.

@ OP Chris@SNL/Monster said it best I think. 4.10s unless you are running out of gear.

I'm going with 4.30s in my 9" and will keep them in untill I upgrade beyond a bolton motor. Even then, if I go with a high RPM N/A build I may keep them in there.

By the time you are done modding that stock diff and upgrading axles and driveshaft you will have just about paid for a 9" or LPE 9.5"

The car is mainly a daily driver with a few trips to the track throughout the year. The car doesnt do too many highway trips but it will be on the occasional road trip.
