No problem. When I started to see the tops being replaced on the 5th gens I assumed they were replacing the whole assembly and how hard could it be. Then all the other problems were getting posted and I realized they were replacing just the canvas. It would be more expensive to do the whole assembly but sure would be easier and cleaner with less problems to pop up. Maybe that is what the fix will be someday.

Just curious, those on this site having tops replaced, are they doing the work at the dealership OR are they subbing it out to a trim shop or some outside person that regularly does convertible tops or boat tops ??? Not sure how a dealership personnel are trained in top replacements !!??

My dealer hired one of the original top designers to come in on his own time to teach/train one of the dealer's techs to replace tops.
It cost the dealership a bunch of money, but it should pay off in the long run since they'll be able to do the tops themselves in the future.

I'm afraid to get my top replaced since my current one only has rub marks but has no noise/leaks.

My dealer and other in the area outsource to trim shops since they have more experience with vert tops. But in this case they are not familiar with the camaro top replacement and are not asking for help from the dealership or GM tech assistance. The anchors above the rear side windows need to be attacked correctly otherwise the top in damaged beyond repair. This is now the issue I'm dealing with.

That's one well connected dealer, the cave that us engineers hide in isn't hard to find but we have many many decoys.

I'd suggest leaving well enough alone and not entertain a top replacement at this stage. You're still under warranty for a couple of years but you may want to consider taking some pics from time to time to possibly document the existence and progression of rub marks or break out a video camera. Then, wait and see if a more effective fix is developed unless your original top's impairments invite other problems such as wind noise or the potential for water leaking into the cabin.

I would still suggest taking it to the dealer and getting the rub marks on the record.

Get it in and noted on record for your vin. If issues are present you can still get them repaired even after warranty has expired if it has been noted. Bring it in please. This is the only way Chevy knows we have problems with our tops.

I have taken it in and had the TSB done, the service manager was VERY polite and told me it is documented now so if any further fixes come out they will contact me.

I agree whole heartedly with the posts above- if you have an original top with wear marks, but no full holes yet- take it to your dealer (so its documented and the magnitude of the problem is known) and WAIT for a tried and tested fix... I'm in my 3rd top, 1 pissed off dealership and a worthless trim shop. I'm going to a bigger dealership 100 miles away to get help directly from GM... Definitely has not been worth the aggregation with al the generic band-aid style fixes.

To answer the other question - outsourcing. They sent mine to a really reputable trim shop- but no matter how good they may be, there is zero training nor experience with these tops... and he screwed it up...

Document and wait.

Excellent idea to take it in and have the service people document it. It should be possible to receive a printout when the document it, shouldn't it? That way, one can be in posession of a hardcopy in case the electronic records get "lost" at the dealer.
