Included in a document released to the media by UAW were GM's plans to continue building current and future products at 16 of 18 U.S. assembly plants. Also included is apparently confidential information about GM product cycles. These plans include:

The Corvette and the Cadillac XLR will continue through 2011, with new models to begin production in 2012 at the Bowling Green, Kentucky plant.
After a couple of years of waiting, the new Camaro is expected to begin production in 2011 at Lansing, Michigan.

Couldn't be more wrong, indeed. I read that 'document' myself, and ever direct reference to the Camaro project had it slated for production late '08. But I'll double check...

Production slated to start late 08 and will be in showrooms early 09 as a 2010 production model. Thats where people are confused.. its released in 2009 but called a 2010, Just like you can buy a 2008 vette right now.. and its 2007.

Are you sure the first year Camaro will be called a 2010? I thought it was going to be a 2009 model.

The statement in the article above is just wrong about 2011, maybe a typo or their mis-information.

Maybe they will move production from Oshawa to Lansing in 2011 or maybe someone is just trying to piss me off by sayin I have to wait another 2 years

Thanks for pointing that out, but all our GM heads of staff have verified numerous times that it will be an 09 model released in 09 with the vert following closely behind. Released late 08, early 09...

Despite the fact that GM Chairman Rick Wagoner originally said the 2010 Camaro would be "virtually identical" to designer Sangyup Lee's concept that debuted at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show, Lutz confirmed that the production Camaro will in fact have a B-pillar, making it a standard coupe instead of a traditional hardtop coupe.

Its also been confirmed by the people on camaross.com that went to the Q&A in Michigan this year... they just couldn't publicly announce it. Its why they renamed their forums from 2009 camaro concept discussion to the 5th gen camaro discussion.

It will be released in 2009 as a 2010 model year name.

Until I see "2010 Chevrolet Camaro" in a direct quote from a GM official, I'm sticking with 2009.

However, I can see how that would make some sense.

It's pretty much agreed that this car is going to be available to the public in February of 2009, a full 5 months later than the usual September release date for new vehicles. Now, if this was a 2009 Camaro, that would only allow for a 7 month model year, they'd have to be ready with the 2010 version pretty quick. Now, if this was the 2010 Camaro, they'd have an extra long model year (19 months). This makes more sense to me as they are already planning on releasing the convertible and whatever special editions soon afterwards. They really don't need to release a new model of the coupe or convertible that soon. Plus, let's not forget the whole aspect of model year sales. With an extra long model year, they can boost their numbers for the records.

As for the idea of moving to Michigan for the 2011 model year? Keep dreaming. GM spends millions of dollars to outfit a factory for a specific car, they are not going to outfit the Oshawa plant just to move it all after the initial release. Unless they're thinking they will need to produce the Camaro in two separate plants simultaneously, in which case they must be predicting a HUGE number of sales.

I think what may have happened is that the author misunderstood that 'document'. Though there were many allusions to the GMX511/521 (Camaro) they were all a sidenote explaining the different Zeta parts....

There was a mention of something Zeta being produced in Michigan...but that was all I saw. I'm only mentioning this, because that article claimed to be referencing the UAW/GM contract.

This is more than likely the case. Right now GM builds Chevy Tahoes, Suburbans, GMC Yukons, Denalis at 2 separate plants, 3 if you count Mexico.

I'm in the middle of reading "Camaro" by Anthony young and I found a passage that seemed pretty relevant to this topic.

This is regarding the February release of the 2nd gen 1970 Camaro:

With the engineering programs completed and long, lead tooling procured, it would be February 1970 before the car would roll into Chevrolet dealers. It was decided it would be best to introduce the new Camaro as a 1970-1/2 model, rather than a very early 1971 model. It was felt that this later idea proved unworkable in terms of new vehicle registration and would have caused confusion in the market.

Now, add 39 years and we see why it will be a 2009 Camaro, and not 2010.

Personally I believe the people who have seen the production model.. and they say 2010 *shrug.. sort of like the badging.. doesn't matter to me.. it will be in dealers in early 2009 whatever badging or name.

What will the difference actually be if GM calls it the 2010 model over the 2009 model year? Nothing really...it's still going to be released early 09...maybe even in Nov/Dec of 08......still the same Camaro.
