JBA vs SW Retro Catbacks

If you have a worthy contender I should consider, let me know.

I'm hooking up to stock cats and headers because of ridiculous CA laws.

I know I will not sound as roaring as the JBA video below with stock, but my hope is to sound similar. Take off is the main thing I like about JBA.

But what do YOU think? Many people I talk to and who listen to these clips like SW better.

Thanks for the help and opinions.

The car in the JBA video is also running headers and high flow cats so your car will sound very different. The car in our video only has the Stainless Works Retro Chambered cat back and a CAI air intake.

Hi Chase, that is what I was thinking, plus his microphone is a lot closer to the pipe plus there is some audio work done (I hear some reverb).

That is why video's are so hard to tell. I know without headers and high flow cats, the JBA or any system, will retain more bass, less rasp and less throaty growl in the top end.

Let me know your thoughts

That's about right. You'll lose a good deal of volume running the stock manifolds too. You can't beat that SW system for sound with the stock manfiolds.

The JBA 3" exhaust without headers sounded great on my car before I got carried away. I would recommend it as it had the perfect exhaust note before I added my other parts. Price was great also from Maryland Speed.

I had the one below in the link and it sounded great.

Long tubes and High Flow cats made everything WAY louder.

It was perfect before I added the other parts.

ok, why is SW almost TWICE the expense of JBA when the sound of JBA seems more aggressive anyway?

People need to start doing proper audio recording too, especially companies. When I get my exhaust, I'll record with a condenser and cardiod, mix it, master it.

Finally, maybe it comes down to the X pipe verses H pipe of the JBA. I want the popping to be accented. Whose is better?

Sorry for asking questions, but $600-$1200 is a lot for having a good 'note' and no performance. I paid $1800 for a custom tube guitar amp and get to enjoy all types of raunchy, beautiful 'notes' and music, lol

Maybe the JBA system is made of 409 Stainless too?? I don't know for sure. I know the SW is 304 all the way to the tips. I was always told the X-pipe is better than a H-pipe. And if you want the decel popping to be "accented", I can tell you that mine is very pronounced. Sounds Great!!! Send Apex Chase a PM and ask him for his best price on the SW system, it's not $1200!!!

Mattbatt, where in CA are you located? You may be able to find some local people who have the systems and hear them in person. Unless you get the same camera at the same angle recording both back to back, you will never be able to tell anything by videos.

I would say the big part of it is that JBA uses 409 stainless steel (OEM grade) and Stainless Works uses much higher quality 304L stainless steel. Another factor increasing the price disparity due to material costs would be that Stainless Works enforces a Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) policy and it does not appear that JBA does.

I live in El Dorado Hills, CA, 30 minutes from Sacramento.

Thank you Chase for your input, I do appreciate it. I didn't know about the metal.

Finally, what is a fair estimation of installation cost? I don't have a lift or anything and figured I'd have someone do it unless it is pretty easy...

A catback installs pretty easy with basic hand tools. Any local shop should do it for $100 or less but if you wanted to do it yourself it's not to difficult. Just make sure you have a good set of jack stands and take your time. Make sure everything is straight and where it needs to be before you tighten it down.

The JBA system was 409SS but I figured if Magnaflow uses 409SS and charges 1K for their system then the JBA for $500.00 was not bad.

I never care about the grade of stainless as I paint all my exhaust systems with Black BBQ paint right away as I don't like the eye sore.

Just my 02

My parents live 5 minutes from the boat launch ramp of Lake Folsom.

I know people here in the bay area that have both catbacks, but it's kind of a drive for you to come down and hear them in person. I don't know when either of them are going up your way next either.

Installing a cat back exhaust isn't very difficult if you can get a jack and stands. Takes about an hour or two if you don't know what you're doing. It's just bolts and clamps is all.
Most shops with a lift should be able to install an exhaust in 30 minutes if the fitment of the system is good.

The 409 I have on the Flowmaster exhaust has held up just fine. I don't see the difference between 304 and 409 on exhaust except 304 is polished.
