Question on brakes

How long are brakes usually good for? I bought my '11 LS back in Dec '10 and have 17500 miles on the car already since it is my DD. I am curious to know how long the original brakes are usually good for. Is there a common mileage that you usually should consider changing them out or is it more of a how the car is driven type of deal? I used to drive a '99 Explorer that I coulddnt have cared less about so I would drive the car into the ground but with this one I want to make sure I take care of it best I can. Any insight you all could provide would be appreciated. Thanks.
