Lifter Tick after 1/4 mile runs

Well I finally took it to track and ran it around 10 times...terrible times for the mods I think (13.00 @ 115) but I could not get traction through 1st or 2nd...and its was only about 42 degrees out...

Anyway after the last run, I heard this loud ticking (and not the LS3 std valvetrain noise)...so I'm assuming its something to do with valvetrain, however no CEL or anything and all gauges looked good...

So I limped it to a gas station to get it towed and maybe 2mi down the road the ticking stopped...all seems to be fine...any ideas??

Thanks,
Steve

Possible exhaust leak when things got real hot and expanded from hot lapping it that much.

Ok this is going be a long shot...but the other day I was leaving the store and my car started ticking loudly..I was like oh crap a lifter just collapsed...anyways I drove it home and popped the hood with it running...somehow a spark plug wire came off one of the coils. The ticking noise was the spark arcing across from the coil to the wire. I have no idea how it happened but it did..I also had no CEL and no misfire.

Just checked all the spark plug boots and the headers for any exhaust leak signs (black soot on the head)...no problems.

Started it up and sounds completely normal. I'm curious why the tick would be there and then just go away...not convinced I'm outta the woods yet...

Mine ticks at cold starts. I told the dealer about it and he said it was nothing to worry about. I'm taking it to another dealer to get a second opinion. I have read on here some other people have had this problem. Good luck..

Thats not the only place you can get a leak.

13 seconds with cam and headers??? get some practice. sorry I got off topic. How hot was your oil temps? Just a shot in the dark, but when the oil temp rises maybe it's easier to hear valve train noise.

How much oil are you putting in your engine on an Oil and filter change and what kind of oil.

Ted.

Yes Yes I know...13.00 is terrible...need practice, however the more important issue is the noise...

Ted,

When I changed to the melling 10296 due to the stock oil pump failure...I put in 7.6L of 5w30 Mobil 1.

ColdCamaro,

Just checked the oil level...looks like its below the low level (quite a bit actually)...which is a bit concerning, considering I don't have a single oil leak (knock on wood) and when I checked the level on my last oil change it was right in the center...and the saga continues. I'll top it off in the morning. and check again...

Use Mobil 1 10/30 and only put 7 quarts in with a new filter.

More than that causes lifter tick on high rpm.

Also do you have a catch can, that oil is going somewhere and could be going in your intake.

Ted.

Thanks Ted, I will do that.

I do not have a catch can...won't be running until next spring so I think that will be one of this winters modifications...along with CNC heads...and drag radials...

Skip the Drag Radials and get some Slicks.
