Tunnel brace?

Have a question? I just installed a 3 inch exhaust. My tunnel brace will not fit anymore. Is it needed or is there one I can buy specifically for 3" or bigger exhaust.

I searched and could not find any info. So please keep the butthead comments to yourself.

I believe BMR sells a stronger one that adds clearance. For mine, I just added a few washers to each bolt to give it enough clearance so that it doesn't make contact with the piping.

This what you need. American Racing Headers created this brace. It's awesome, rock solid, made for 3 inch exhaust:

Nice-looking brace! I can't believe I haven't seen/heard of that one 'til now. 'Might have to go on my to-do list.

(This thread should probably be moved to the suspension section of the forums.)

I did an ass load of research on this and basically it is there to aid in rigidity of the chassis upon side impact! some will say its not needed, some will say it is. I couldnt stand it not being there. I ordered the elite engineering tunnel brace that has a built in 1/4 in drop also added the dogbone spacers that came with my SW catback system. a coule washers will work.

make sure the Xpipe is not in upside down. the ARH x pipe has a slight bend in it that allows it to tuck up nicely in the tunnel. if its upside down it will extend an inch below the tunnel. dont know whos xpipe your running but you may want to check on it.

The brace definitely adds rigidity to the chassis. As evidenced by jacking the car from the rear left side by the exhaust. with the brace in, i can get the car up high enough to slide the jackstands under both sides of the car. without it, the right side droops about 2 inches too low with the floor jack fully extended. cant get the jack stand under it.

Good luck with this, it kept me up at nights.

I installed this one, I had to add some longer bolts and 2 painted black aluminum block shims. My SLP resonators are right where this brace installs.

Also, when you choose what brace you want, make sure the exhaust does not touch it and vibrate. I did a search and found a few people on here had the exhaust touching the brace, and the vibration was felt through the car, all the way to the knock sensors on the engine. The computer thought the car was having detonation, so it would retard the timing. So the car was actually losing power.

Ok. Yes the X pipe was upside down. However even after fixing that it is still to low for my aftermarket Barton tunnel brace even with 4 washers on each bolt. Any ideas?

My stock exhaust hits but it is because of the high flow cats. For some reason they hang bit lower than stock ones and certain types of bumps cause the thing to hit the brace.

What i did was loosen all connections all the way back. with a floor jack on the Xpipe, i jacked it all the way up into the tunnel then tightened all connections from the headers all the way back. then lowered the jack and it stayed put. Also, try rotating the pipes coming off the headers, if you do it just right it will raise the xpipe up also

I just had a full Kooks system installed, and even with the below LSR brack, AND an additional half inch spacer, the bracket still won't fit.

The bracket I have (Plus half inch spacers):
http://www.lsrperformance.com/camaro...clearance.html

Any suggestions? Install was done by a reputable shop here in Florida, recommended by many here, and looks perfect otherwise, thus I don't think there is anything install wise that could have been done different.

Yeah, I don't really go to the tracks at all... I'd like to just go ahead and leave it out, unless I can get one custom made with like an inch of drop or something...

If the exhaust is hitting the tunnel brace than the exhaust was improperly installed. I have a 3" exhaust and my factory tunnel brace fit with no issues and no spacers so an aftermarket tunnel brace is not needed. If you're having issues with an aftermarket tunnel brace AND additional spacer, than the shop most definitely did not install the exhaust correctly.

might try as bull said but i cant really feel any diff in my car with and without it. mine is 480's rwhp with a 150 shot on it. but i dont do no autocross or anything. i cant see that small of a tunnel brace doing a whole lot anyway. but now a good one like posted above would help a good bit.

No offense, but just because yours fit with no problems, doesn't mean the install was done improperly. I see dozens of threads of people with various exhausts, installed by various shops who are sponsors here and highly recommended, as was the case with mine, who have problems with clearance on this brace.

It's not like every single car is built to exact specifications, nor are the aftermarket parts. They should be very very close, but there will be variances... Same reason some people have a problem with a X brand of header hitting the steering knuckle, while others do not.

I'm not saying it is impossible it was installed improperly, I just think it is unlikely.

No it was installed incorrectly. If you go back and look at those threads and find the ones where the OP did as suggested and fixed the exhaust, you will see their clearance issues disappeared. There will be zero clearance issues with the top brand exhausts if they are done correctly.
