2nd gear grind issue and updated GM parts (pics)
Im tired of the 2nd gear issue with my M6 so since I work as a technician at a chevy dealer I decided to pull the trans out of my car, rip it down and see what I can find myself. First off its kind of a pain in the ass to rip that thing down lol. It was my first 6 speed manual that I have pulled apart so I was going by the books making sure I do everything the right way.
Theres like 12 special GM tools you need to use, anyways once inside I found what I think is the issue, which is the blockring rings for 2nd gear. In the pictures you can see the wear on the brass ring, when pressed down on second gear its self the ring still spins, it shouldnt. There is about 10,000 miles on this trans and its the second trans in the car due to 2nd gear grind. I was about to order the new updated carbon rings that everyone has been putting in them from aftermarket companies. I called a few after market companies and found out they wanted like 500-600 JUST for the new rings. I decided to hold off as its going to be covered by warranty anyways. So I get the parts today for second gear and low and behold they are the CARBON UPDATED rings right from chevy I thought id pass this info along with pictures to anyone with second gear issues to print off and that way you can SHOW the service manager at your local dealer that there is infact an updated ring that is supposed to solve some of the 2nd gear issues. Maybe that will persuade them to open the tranny up and replace the rings for you guys! Hope it helps! Old ![]() Updated

I've had my tranny rebuilt already with the 2 gear carbon ring, and now that works like a charm..... 3rd gear still has a little something that's not so right

I would be extremely interested in knowing if there might be an update for these in the 2010 V6 AY6 transmission as well. I am on the verge of selling my camaro just to avoid the hassle of dealing with the tranny issues in the future. If there are updated parts that might fix the grinding/binding that would be awesome news.

I am with Mike on this one. I have 3000k miles on my 2012 and the only grind I ever got going from 1st to 2nd was due to operator error. Plus, my service manager has verified that the tranny has been updated for 2012 and the second gear grind should not be an issue.
I just make sure the tranny is up to temp before any 6000 rpm shifts. Works like magic. ![]() Enjoying the ride Mike? Told you it was worth the wait. ![]() -Funk

2010 LS3, I have owned it since August 2009 and have about 28,000 miles. As of late mine sounds like a meat grinder going into second. It seems to have slowly got worse over the past two years, this past summer being pretty bad. I will be contact the dealer soon to get this looked at and the heated seats fixed, and the HVAC update and the PDIM update... I am a little behind

It rocks and the top has been up probably 400 miles out of the 3000 miles since I got it.
Still have that 3rd gear nibble but I am hoping it will get better when I change the fluid here in the next couple of weeks. Just glad I don't have the 1-2 grind. ![]() -Funk

How does the Factory Hurst feel in the '12s?
I'm about to order a '12 and am trying to decide if I want the Hurst option or not. I drove an '11 with a Hurst, and to me it felt notchy. But I'm use to the base shifter in my '10 which is pretty smooth. Anyone go from a '10 to a '12 with a Hurst? Glad you got the Hurst, or does the shorter throw makes it notchy and buzz 2nd/3rd? I didn't like the '11 I drove at all, but maybe if the '12s have improved blockers/synchros the Hurst might feel better? |

What is the TSB number for this?! My car is in the shop and before they turn around and tell me there is nothing wrong. I'd like for them to see it and acknowledge it.

To my knowledge there has never been a TSB issued.
I can't comment on how the Hurst compares to stock but I like the notchy feel of the factory Hurst. I get a more notchy feeling 2-3. -Funk

There is no TSB. I wrote the above so you guys could print the forum page out and bring that to your service advisor. Thats why I supplied the pictures so you can see the difference in the syncros. If needed shoot me a PM and I can give you the updated GM part numbers for the 2nd gear carbon synchro so you can give to your advisors aswell.

So you mentioned that the 2nd gear synchro and blocker is updated, but what about gears 1,3 and 4 . . . and 5 and 6 for that matter? I'm having an issue with 5th not engaging as well, unless I double clutch.

1,3,4,5,6 are not updated. I just found that out today. But what I did was paid the extra 210 bucks and got the carbon rings for 2nd gear x3 since the rings for 1,2,3,4, are all the same size. My cost on the rings is 70 bucks, list is like 120 or so, GM paid for 2nd gear to be fixed and I paid for the other 3. Its alot less then buying aftermarket and its the same thing.
