My question of the hour

So me and my family are traveling from Louisiana to Colorado. This morning I filled up with 91 oct fuel because it was not much more than regular. On that tank I got 24.5 mpg. I filled up in Texas with regular. On that tank I got 27.7 mpg and that's with my a/c on. I have been doing between 65 and 75 mph. What gives?

Could be air temperature change, elevation change, ethanol, etc.

Ethanol content from one station to another may affect you. We drove a friends Corvette from Louisiana to missouri and back. Got 29mpg on the way there using gas from a known ethanol free source. Recorded 2mpg less on the way back after filling up in the corn belt. Drove the exact same speed both directions on cruise control. Also, perhaps the premium gas was 'stale' as it isn't pumped as much as lower grade fuel. My 1LT recorded 29mpg at 75 on cruise with the ac on over a three hour drive, 87 octane.

my guess is that from tank one to tank two you were climbing at a higher rate in elevation. From my house to to my in-laws it seems completely flat, but on that half our freeway drive, i get about 3MPG better on the way there vs the way back.

What does the v6 Camaro take usually/recommended?

If it doesnt require high octane like 91/93 you want see an advantage just wasting money.
...maybe also the time of day and elevation

Mine did the same on a long trip from Savannah to NY. I used the same 93 octain on every tank. First tank was just over 310 miles, second tank was almost 400, by the time I was coming back to Savannah I was over 420 miles per tank. Best I can figure the car seems to reset its calculations from my usual city driving to all highway driving.

Is it possible that the fill up in Texas was of a higher tier with additional cleaners in it and they simply did the advertised job of cleaning the fuel system and related components along the route.....thus increasing the per gallon milage rate?
