Camaro Clutch Concern...

I've been chatting with my dealer lately. Since we are in Michigan, there are many GM employees who have the inside scoop on the Camaro production. I just received an email stating he heard from an employee there is an issue with them burning clutches up in the Camaro. Has anyone heard this? He didn't say if it was the V6 or V8, but it sounds like it may be both. I can't imagine this is the case, but I'm interested if anyone can chime in. Perhaps Number 3 or Scott can comment?

And I know this is easy to write off since its a dealer and all, but both him, and the employee I heard this from, have Camaro's on order. He's been very good about info, so I do have some faith in him.

Uh... people... please remember. these trannys have been used in the corvette for 5 years now...

I'm not sure where they are getting the info from. but i'd be hard pressed to think that the more powerful corvette wouldnt have burned through them first.

The Corvette is lighter. The GTO is heavy and has just 26 less horsepower.

My spirited driving in my son's GTO has not hurt the clutch.

The clutch in the base Corvette, GTO has and now the Camaro should hold up very well.

I can't tell you how many magazine guys tear up clutches in test cars. That and other people who can't drive a stick very well.

Not to worry.

Robin

I'm sure the clutch is plenty strong enough to hold up. GM is not going to build a great car like this and have a weak cutch that needs to be replaced under the 100,000 mile drive train warranty.

As long as you don't "slip" the clutch all the time it should hold up fine. If you're going to drag race every day you may need to replace it sooner. In that case it may or may not be covered. I'm sure the warranty is "conditional" and the service tech can tell if it failed from abuse. Otherwise, I would not be worried.

No matter how badly designed, how defective from the factory, how insufficient it is...they'll never cover it under warranty under any condition whatsoever, if my experience is any indicator. Wear items that are specifically named as not covered, are REALLY not covered. I had a windshield that cracked from temperature difference while trying to defrost it, in conditions that certainly should have been part of design specifications, could not get it covered. I had brake rotors that cracked before my pads were even worn out...not covered (the salesman even specifically told me that they were covered when I was buying, which I thought was odd).

Still, I'm confident that they wouldn't put in a woefully insufficient clutch.

why would it not be covered under warranty? maybe your dealer is just tryin to pocket a lil extra money because they only get paid what ever the book says they should under warranty.

When I bought my 00 camaro the throw out bearing was worn out and they replaced it and the whole clutch under warranty no problems (i bought it used it wasn't me that wore it out)

Clutch disc is a wear item. Throwout bearing is not. Abuse is never covered and is usually easy to spot. I've seen some real "my customer is an idiot" cases.

Thanks Scott!

Like I said, it was just something my dealer had heard about, figure I'd run it by everyone.

no wear and tear items are covered under warranty.

now, the dealer can cover it if they want, and they will get paid.

my friends 07 gt has his clutch/flywheel replaced under warranty at 25k miles. things had slicks on it, and every bolt on in the book, and they still covered. wouldnt call that the norm though
