Some 1LE history; I likes 3rd Gens!!

What The 1LE consisted of: (Categorized & Year By Year)
In 1988, the secret showroom stock racing 1LE option (option level 0 IROC-Z) was first available; however, only 4 were produced. Then in 1989, the option became more well-known as 111 were produced that year. The package was obtained by ordering the following:

Level 1 IROC-Z with 5.0 TPI engine (LB9) with 5 speed or 5.7 TPI engine (L98) with 4-speed automatic. These Camaro's had 145 mph speedometers and 5500 rpm redline tachs. Optional axle ratio (G92) (305/3.45, 350/3.27) and its required options G80 Limited-Slip rear axle

Package consisted of (G92 Was Ordered With A/C) [Street Vehicle]:

engine oil cooler 4-wheel disc brakes Performance exhaust system (N10) (dual catalytic converters) Tires P245/50 ZR16 Goodyear Gatorback

Note:

G92 ordered WITH A/C was classifieds as a Street vehicle.

G92 ordered WITHOUT A/C was classifieds as Race series.


Package consisted of (G92 Ordered Without A/C) [Race Vehicle]:

The 1LE was the best handling and lightest package available, although the B4C had most of it's content and was the only way to get the big heavy duty racing brakes along with air conditioning and power windows/locks and mirrors if you wanted them.

Chevrolet built only 19 Camaro's with "1LE" equipment for 1993. This included larger diameter front and rear stabilizer bars, stiffer shock absorber valving, harder durometer control arm bushings front and rear, power sterring cooler, and radiator baffles for added engine cooling. Air conditioning, power windows/locks or mirrors was not available with 1LE.

Chevrolet built 135 Z28 Coupes with "1LE" equipment for 1994. Content changes slightly as the rear sway bar for 1LE and Z28 are the same (downsized from previous year) and the new Koni double adjustable shock absorbers becomes available as factory installed content in the 1LE.

This is the last year of the 1LE as installed from the factory. SLP adds 1LE as an option in later years but does not include previous content and is not factory installed by GM.

As the attached table will show, the '86 A4Q (the only '86s with L69-305 carb'd engines) and '87 A4U F-cars (IROC and T/A) predated and contributed the direct development of the 1LE package, which arrived in '88 (again, on both Camaro and Firebird). By 1989, the "Canadian" package was re-assigned the R7U option code.

ALL R7Us are 1LEs...but NOT all 1LEs are R7Us...

Imagine being able to go to your local Canadian Chev or Pontiac dealer and being able to buy a roll-caged BIG-braked exhaust-dumped F-car right off the showroom floor! A4U-A4Q-R7U made that possible...and I sold three of 'em...

The Canadian MSRP, for these very special cars, was about $17,500, circa '86-'88.

The Player's Challenge races paid $5,000 to win, $4,000 for 2nd, $3,000 for 3rd, $2,000 for 4th, and $1,000 for 5th...plus a new set of Goodyears for each of those positions. Good money...and a possible good ROI...

The Team we sponsored in '86 won $10,000...and all the tires they needed for the season. They missed one event, and still finished 6th Overall. Repairs at year-end was less than $500, total. They sold the car for $12,000...a pretty cheap season of racing!

Some Teams wrote off more than one car...

The 1LE option price varied from year to year...and even during the MY. There were supply issues and/or "re-rationalization" of including the adjustable Konis. Without the Konis, the RPO price for 1LE was about $500 in '95 as an option on the one-of-two Firebird Formula I sold. With the Konis, near $1,000. That was NET, as there were no credits for deleted features.

2cnd, don't get too hung up on, or put too-too much em-PHA-sis on the wrong sy-LAB-le, in all this rhetoric. The lead-in for the 1LE states, and I quote, “The Camaro 1LE concept is all about the track,” said Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer for the Camaro. “It’s an all-out race car package that pays tribute to that special option from the past.”

What they have on display is NOT the SSX, which is the closest they've got to "all-out race car package" (MR-excluded) that you'll NEVER buy off a Chevy showroom floor.

Is there a case for the 1LE? Likely.

Is it, fully, a "Z/28"? Not quite, in MY mind...

...but it's pretty damned close...just a little more "boil" in the boiler room, pleaZe!

Those 3 magic alpha-numerics, in my sig, would do jus' fine!

If they don't build a 5th Gen Z28 and do build a 1LE I may buy one and add an LS7 and badge it a Z28 myself!!!

I hope I don't strike any nerves....

But I'm sincerely wondering why some of us are restricting all Camaro history to the first generation cars when discussing the "should's and shouldn'ts of a Z28?

It is 2011, guys...Why couldn't the Z28 represent a modern take on its lineage through the 1LE package as-is....

The 5th Gen is a reinterpretation of the 1st, hence the comparisons. Also the 2cnd Gen was the beginning of the theory that stickers make it faster.

Mainly why settle GM obviously doesn't.
