Those are all odd matchups at best but I can't think of anything that would make more sense, at least until GM steps up to the plate with the expected Z/28.
Actually when I bought my GT500 I looked at the Challenger SRT-8, Camaro SS, and GT-R. Talk about a variety. I almost bought a SRT-8 Challenger and GT-R. Didn't get the Challenger because I lost my job right before I went to order it. Didn't get the GT-R because you have to baby it like a Ferrari.

Also, unlike Ford, GM has to worry about stepping on vettes toes. Sure they are not the same class car (IMO) but imagine a Camaro with the performance of a Zo6 or even near it ! Then what ? At what price ?

Lot of hard questions there...will be interesting to see the answers.
The Z/28 wouldn't be anywhere near a Z06. It would be stepping on the base Corvette's toes, not the Z06. I'd imagine it would have every bit the straight line speed (if not more) of the Corvette, but I'd expect it to fall behind the Corvette on the road courses. However, that might not be the case considering the Z/28's history of it being a road course oriented vehicle. It's things like this that are probably keeping GM from giving it the go ahead.

This is one sexy beast. Get me payments like I'm paying on my Camaro and I'd pay for them both!

From the video, its sounds good. Sounds like more S/C whine. Also it seems it is putting down better traction as well.

Why the GT50 is around 13k more expensive, 50 less HP, and according to the MT article, 3950 pounds, so it is also heavier.

I'm sure the GT500 is an impressive performer but it has miles to go in the looks department. The thing hurts my eyes!

Okay, I'm reviving this thread but only to point out the following:

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is built by Ford Motor Company.

The Shelby GT350 Mustang is a package offered by Shelby Automobiles, Inc. , not Ford Motor Company, that can be added on a first come, first serve basis to any Mustang GT.

Contrary to any magazine covers and/or online blogs you may have read, neither was built nor intended to be a direct competitor to the Chevrolet Camaro.

That is all.

Didn't you get the memo? In order to appreciate the Camaro's styling, you have to be a GM guy. Likewise, in order to appreciate the GT500's styling, you have to be a Ford guy!

2011 GT500

Yep. So the '11 GT500 was revealed, and I gotta say, wow. It's a new aluminum block and some other upgrades that boost the power to 550 hp and it weighs 120 pounds less.

So my question is,

If or when the z28 comes out, with a LSA pulled STRAIGHT OUT of a CTS-V, will it be:

What? I love my Camaro SS, and also the Shelby GT500. The 2011 GT500 looks sick as hell. I'm not a fan of the Mustang's design, but I actually like the 2011 Mustang's and Shelby's.

I think the 2011 GT350 looks horrible though.

I Like the design of the 2011 GT-500, but the stripes look . I hope they offer a stripe deletion option.

Performance how? Straight line? Handling? Fuel economy?

Once again, for all those not paying attention:

1) The narrow stripes on the 2011 GT500 are not the standard stripe package. The standard stripe package is the same as the 2010 GT500.

2) If you opt for the SVT Performance Package, you also get the "unique" (i.e ugly and narrow) stripes in addition to all the performance goodies.

3) Any GT500 can be ordered without stripes. you don't need to hope they offer a stripe delete package; it's been there since day one.

4) They are vinyl stripes. If you did want everything else that comes with the SVT package but do not want the stripes, take the off. Replace them with the standard stripes. You have plenty of options.

What DG said. What are the metrics you want to judge "performance" by? Hard to speculate without knowing what you are looking for.

Most people judge performance in cars by:

0-60 mph (quickness)
1/4 mile times and Trap speeds (power/ speed)
Lap times on a road course. (handling/ power/ control)
________
Redblock Engine

Well, in that case ...

0-60 is a toss up and will depend largely on traction. The Z28 may have the edge based on what tuners have been accomplishing with their turn key Camaros. It will be very close though.

1/4 mile and trap, GT500. Power to weight ratio.

Road course ... thats a big unknown. The Camaro may out handle the GT500 but with a 100+ lb weight reduction in the nose of the Shelby, its handling should improve nicely. But we don't have a reference point for how the Z28 would handle.
