I know Vararam was a very very tight fit. Maybe you can get away with 6mm but I don't know about anything bigger. I thought I was going to have a problem with my AEM but I was very surprised to see it fit right on like a glove even with the extra height. One thing I noticed is that the original gasket are very thick right around the edge of the holes. So when I put 2 gaskets with the insulators it almost increased the total height by another 4-5mm. I am very comfortable to say that we can raise our manifold up to 20+ mm safely.

The guys over at MACE engineering is already keeping their eyes on this thread but I will let them know of the results today.

Formare, you can purchase the 6mm now from MACE and my porting is done from darin D at high flow. He offer from mild stg1 to stg3 if you plan to get the most out of it and do the head work too down the line. Darin was here a while back but got the vince treatment from the mods.

First butt impression coming later on this evening

if you take out the windshield wiper trim completely before working I think it might make it easier, but I think uninstalling the wipers and the trim itself could be a hassle.

I won't have my first butt dyno impression until tonight. I will be finishing up the install later this afternoon.

I will get some before/after logs for you guys also, then I should be on the dyno next tuesday

Well.. it look like the install is going to be finished tomorrow After I got off work around 2:30pm I only had about good 2 1/2 hours to get everything test fit and installed. It got pitch black here right around 5:30pm.

Anyhow, taking out the stock manifold is not that difficult until you get to the 3 bolts all the way in the back of the manifold and under the windshield wiper trim. 1 is part of 6 actual manifold bolts and the other 2, well.. I guess it does not even matter since it will be useless once the insulator is installed and the manifold is raised. There's barely not any room back there so get ready to spend some time and scrape up your hands. Here's a pic of the bolts. The angle only show 2. The vertical standing bolt is the manifold bolt.
Attachment 304107

After I finished uninstalling the stock manifold the first thing I noticed is bunch of loose dirt right around the inlet holes. If you guys see the same then you might want to carefully take a wet rag and get all of the dirt off and away from the holes. One thing you do not want is those dirt getting inside your head. Here is a pic of what I am talking about.
Attachment 304113

Now this is one of the part that took most of my time. I figured if I can fit 18mm then this means that anything smaller then 18mm won't be a problem. So, I took out my RTV the right stuff gasket maker and put the 6mm and the 12mm together. This is my first time using the gasket maker(I just heard good things about the right stuff)so this is what I ended up with
Attachment 304115

The gasket maker said 1 minute..ummm, yhea ok After waiting for it to turn rubber and scraping and cleaning all that sticky crap off the insulator and myself I can already see the sun starting to go down.
Attachment 304116

but at the end it came out really well
Attachment 304117
Attachment 304118

Well.. after test fitting everything, the 18mm fit without any issues but keep in mind that all of the supporting bolts to help hold the manifold in place will be useless due to the manifold being raised. The holes will not line up anymore unless some of you can come up with some creative ideas. So the only bolts that will hold the manifold in place will be the 6 actual manifold bolts which I think is more then enough. Once you guys see how big and long these manifold bolts are you will understand. Here are some pics
Attachment 304121
Attachment 304122
Attachment 304123
Attachment 304124

Just when I was ready to reinstall everything back and be on my way under 2hrs, here comes trouble again. You remember the bolts on the back I mentioned earlier? Now try to line up 2 gaskets, one insulator, the manifold itself, while trying to somehow get a 5" new manifold bolt under the wiper trim in the back where is almost impossible for your hand to go in well.. after almost breaking my back and my hands I finally got everything lined up and the bolts and the manifold in place. Now the problem is how in the hell am I suppose to bolt down the rear bolt that I just had a world war 3 with?? well.. this is where it all ended, with one bolt left to screw in. The day got pitch black and it was game over. Time to call it in for the day. I was able to get get the bolt down as far as I can screw it down just using both of my point fingers so tomorrow I will be heading to the tool house and search something small enough that will work. Oh.. and I forgot, the new bolts provided by mace are hex bolts

Is it just me, or did the insulators match up to the head ports??
It looks like it in the one picture. Any head port ledge?

The insulators are matched to the gasket. Bmorecam matched his head to his gasket.

Darin, nope. The insulators does not match with the head. As we already know the insulator has almost the same exact hole size as the factory gasket. I have no idea why mace designed it that way but looking at their dyno graph and according to mace they confirmed to me that we won't see any negative effect so I guess we will just have to see.

Also, one thing I was very impressed with was the quality of the factory head's casting(inlet). I couldn't believe how smooth the casting looked and felt to touch.

get yourself a set of ratcheting box wrenches....they helped out alot when I pulled the ported one I sent to stacey recently. the space back there was rediculously tight, another instance where it's easy to put together and take off when the engine is out of the car, but to hell with the diy'er that has to work the engine in his garage.

Thank you don. The problem is that these are the new bolts that they sent me, just way longer. They are thumb allen bolts and not hex like I mentioned earlier lol.

I have no tools that can reach back there in my tool box that will work with those bolts so I am about to head out to sears or somewhere and see if I can find something that will work.

I also just noticed that my brand new cheap powerbuilt torque wrench is not clicking at all So it look like I will have to go and return that also.

Well.. off to the tool land

Is that a Harbor Freight special? I bought 2 torque wrenches from there and neither one clicked. I resorted back to my old-fashioned torque wrench with the pointer.

Eating too much popcorn can give you direticulitis (sp?), a very painful stomach ailment.

Anywho, this is looking pretty damned awesome Bmore. You're going to have a monster V6 before you know it. Personally, I'm going to TRY to save up for a custom supercharger kit, since Vortech is literally halfway across town (maybe 10 minutes, tops) from my house and they make a number of different centrifugal superchargers. It'll be a bit difficult, since I just bought a house a few months ago and my wife is about to give birth. LOL

*sigh*

Thankfully, I've been lucky with Harbor Freight tools. My friend and I picked up a 300 ft. lbs torque wrench (went halfers on it) from there not too long ago, when I did my rear differential swap.

Everything he and I have gotten from there has been working well for years.

Well guys... I really don't have too much time tonight to give you guys my full impression but so far things are looking good, really good lol.

The first thing that I noticed is that the car feel about 300 lb lighter. No matter what gear you are in you give some throttle and the car just go with no question asked. Even in 6th gear under 2000rpm the car just go. If that ain't torque I don't know what it is.

I have reset the ecm just as mace recommend so for about next 50 miles or so will be easy miles so the ecm can learn the new mods correctly.

And I almost forgot, after driving for about 20 minutes in the traffic I opened up the hood and I was shocked to feel that the manifold was not warm but cool to the touch.

I will give you guys my full review tomorrow when I have more time.

So far it was definitely worth every penny and a very good start to project #2.

so you found a tool to get at those allen headed bolts? good! I was going to suggest you find a cheap allen tool that fits, and the ratcheting box wrench that will hold that allen. Take the allen to a cutting disk and cut you off a short piece like 3/4" long, enough to go into the bolt and leave something for that ratcheting box wrench onto.

But the important thing is you got the spacers on there and the results sound promising! glad to hear it!! it only took those dudes a year to get back to anybody, but sure glad they did
