How much is reasonable now (base price), given the 'Ring times?

So - we see a 7:41:47 in a prototype with more weight. Given it's reasonable to expect production car times should be relatively close, what do you now think, is a reasonable price, and do you think you are still in a position to get ZL1? I ask that you try to be reasonable and support your comments with reasonable statments and expecations. Obviously, it's not reasonable to run around the 'Ring in that time in a Cobalt SS for $20K, for example. Please participate in the poll, too What do you think? What are your thoughts? Is GM going in the right direction? Are they making ZL1 too expensive? I dont' know that I'm asking if you necessarily think your price is reasonable, but I leave it to you to answer. I don't want to restict the poll and thread too much

Personally, I know that $50K isn't going to cut if for this performance. We know there aren't going to be many options, so it's not like we can start at $50K, and have choices to build ZL1 to $58K, say. Maybe we'll only get a suede insert, chunky Chicago Autoshow forged wheels, and MYD as options. I don't know, and make no illusions. I'll start at near $52K for a base price .

Can't be too cheap since the proto beat the Z06 Vette at the 'Ring... which absolutely blows my mind...

That was explained away (so-to-speak) with the way that particular run was ran. It sounds like that wasn't a rolling start time, but I'm still blown away

We have been expecting the ZL1 to be the GT500 competitor for so looooong now that it is in peoples heads that it needs to cost around the same. What if its not supposed to be a GT500 competitor it's just a BAD A$$ car?

I'm starting to get this vibe...

I now think it will start at $55,000 for the M6... most options seem ala carte.. transmission, stripe, suede, wheels. My opinion is that it would be over $60,000 MSRP with an A6, wheels, suede, sunroof, and stripe (or whatever the options end up being). Add GG Tax, etc., etc. I think the performance now allows it to cozy up to the CTS-V starting price - do you want more luxury or more performance? That determines wether or not you buy the CTS-V/ZL1, not price. And why shouldn't it cost more than a base Corvette? It still isn't as much as a Z06 so it is still reasonable IMO.

(repost from my post in another thread, but it is more appropriate here)
I just feel like Reuss is now trying to separate the ZL1 from the GT500 a bit... and one of the few reasons I can think of that he would do that is a much higher MSRP. We have heard up and down how a car like this has never been brought to this segment and a lot of bragging on performance and technology but never really bragging directly from GM about the pricing...

Remember this quote:

“The Camaro ZL1 delivers supercar performance and technology in the sports-car segment,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “For sheer power, the ZL1 delivers more horsepower than a Ferrari 458, more torque than an Aston Martin DB9 V12, and a better power-to-weight ratio than a Porsche 911 Carrera GTS.

So, comparing the ZL1 to some very expensive cars - not to its 'competitor'.

I have had this vibe for awhile now..... just trying no to be a debbi downer!

Vette type performance equals vett type prices... I hope I am wrong though

My gut says $55,000 but my heart hopes for $50,000.

I think this is what it's turned out to be. With the amount of tech involved, and considering the performance numbers I'm thinking I need to add 5-10k to my guess. :(

CTS-V coupe starts at $64,515

We are getting newer tech and better performance but the CTS-V is a lot more luxurious.... Does that make it a wash?

The Nurburgring time doesn't change my expectation of base price for the ZL1 one bit. The Camaro is a Chevrolet, and its main competition is the Ford Mustang, and it must be priced accordingly, regardless of its performance, no matter how often Chevrolet executives put the ZL1 in the same sentence with Ferraris and Aston Martins and Porsches. If General Motors wants to compete head to head for the same buyer dollar as Ferraris, Aston Martins, and Porches, they will have to develop a new sports car brand. The Chevrolet Camaro is, was, and always will be a Pony Car. That's one of the reasons that people have been, and continue to be, passionate about the Camaro. It's always provided affordable performance and been about providing a great value. My estimation of base price for the ZL1 is still right around the $54,000 area.

Let's see what the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are.

Although price is some what of consideration, its not going to be stopping me from buying the ZL1. Life is short and I had a real sad reality check from a good friend of mine who gave me some real bad news. He found out that he has pancriactic cancer and starts chemo next Tuesday. This is a person who runs, looks in great health and a couple years younger then me. I have been sharing all the new info about the ZL1, he is currently driving a porche and was hoping to sway him to buy one also. I just hope and pray for him and his family, but it shows me life has a deadline for all of us.
So its time to live life to the fullist and have some fun. I'm hoping for around 53k but if its higher I'm still buying it. My better half says were all in and next August will be driving out to Indy .

I agree that the Mustang is the Camaros competitor but If the ZL1 is not meant to target the GT500 then why should it have to cost the same?

Maybe its just designed to dominate at the track and not compete with one specific make/model?

Unfortunately, this breathtaking performance is going to make a lot of people want one if the price is around GT500 prices, which in turn will drive prices up with market adjustments from all the demand.
If the price starts high, less people will want one, but the price is still high for anyone who wants one.
Either way, we're gonna be paying plenty. Catch 22.

If the ZL1 wasn't meant to target the GT500 and Boss 302, then General Motors developed the ZL1 on the wrong platform.

This quote seems to support your theory (confusing because the GT500 is listed as the competitor on the ZL1 spec sheet)...

“This car really doesn’t have a direct competitor in segment, or out of segment – that’s how good the car is and I can tell you right now, I’ve driven a lot of cars and done a lot of development – this car is one of the most refined cars.” - Mark Reuss

even in high demand times, you can always find fair and honest dealers. I got my 2SS/RS in May 2009 when MSRP was rare and prople were paying insane mark ups... I paid $3000 UNDER MSRP because I did my homework and found a fair dealer.

It turned a 7:41 so I would not say its the wrong platform....

Im just thinking outside the box here

SS-Z/28-GT500 competitor-Ultimate ZL1.... that would be one hell of a line up!

I have my fingers crossed that it is 53K also. That price is on the verge of my limit. I have quit smoking to be able to try and afford this car (smokers know that it takes something very big to make you stop smoking). Even with the money from not smoking I will be pushing it to get one.

I can’t agree with the corvette/cts-v performance = their cost!?! I am with Goldenbear it is a Camaro and should be aligned with the mustang. Also how many times have you heard "A Camaro is for the working man"? Well I am a working man and trying to give the ZL1 all the money that I can scrounge up.

Here is to praying for another ZL1 miracle
