Carbon Fiber Door Panel? (Vinyl)

So I am wonder if anybody has done this yes, I want to make the Grey portion of my door panel black carbon fiber, the problem is I tried a piece of normal Vinyl and it would not stick, Before I go buying the better 3M dry Carbon Vinyl I want to know if anybody has done this before.......and if so how did you get it to stick and the textured surface like the center of the door panel

Thanks In Advance!

maybe using a spray can of 3M glue adhesive. I have used it to glue door panel cloth that is falling off. Works really good and you can buy it at Walmart for like $9

^^^ Yup that's the look I'm going for (it's more of a flat (dull) dry carbon fiber finish

Carbon Door Panels-

I was going to have my door panels hydrodipped in Carbon Fiber, but then i heard it screwed up the ambient light tubes. Now I've heard of the company called HeadlightArmor.com. They sell this carbon fiber wrap in various lenghts/widths.Check them out, they say the door panels can be covered with this stuff.

SetFree, yes, check out Headlight Armor - http://www.headlightarmor.com/carbon...inyl-wrap.aspx. They have great carbon fiber wrap that would work well on the large center panel. It has a great look and feel. I have used it in several places in my car, you can see a few pics here - http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...=113178&page=8

However, you will need some additional adhesive for any black plastic. And, as TonyTahoe mentions, if you have the ambient lighting in the door panel, this will cover it up.

Yes, it is totally possible. I have my door panels and my dash trim (both pieces) vinyl wrapped with white Carbon Fiber Vinyl (Gloss White Carbon). Hexis is the brand of Vinyl used. That's the same kind that Headlight armor sells. It worked great, and looks unique. Check out my build thread and you'll see pics.

I have a 1SS, so the ambient lighting wasn't an issue at all. Also, the vinly wrap adheres perfectly fine without an additional adhesive. Heat it up good and stretch it out a tad while laying it on. Since I had cloth covered panels, we had to remove that and any old adhesive from the cloth before cleaning and preparing the surface for the vinyl wrap.

This pic will give you an idea what can be wrapped in vinyl :

This bottom one shows the dash trim in vinyl.

Thank You so much TCAT! and thank you everybody else, I am using The Scotch 3M Di-Noc (more expensive but high quality) but the problem is it wont stick to the plastic wall because its not sflat and has a "texture" bumps feel to it, I don't think you had that problem did you TCAT?

I did not have a problem with the Hexis vinyl wrap as long as the surface is somewhat flat and not curvy and contourned. The vinyl doesn't follow sharp bends well without folding up. However, for wrapping the outside of the vehicle (the whole car, or chevy bowties, etc) or any flat surfaces on the interior like the door panels, you should be fine. Hopefully you'll experience the same results. Ask a couple vinyl wrapping shops or contact Hexis directly to see what they recommend when applying. Their Hexis Carbon HX30000 material is supposed to adhere on it's own WITH heat without additional seperate adhesive I believe. Also, buy a cheap heat gun to heat up the vinyl so it adheres well, stretches a tad and forms easily to the surface. Practice on small sections first before a big project. That builds confidence and skill allowing a cleaner and more proffesional look. Otherwise, just have a pro do it for you, but it will obviously be more expensive.

Sorry I don't have better pics. This is from a thread of mine for a different topic. This is 3M 3D carbon fiber vinyl. It will not stick to your panels until heat is applied. It can be a pain to keep air bubbles from popping up so I would get the adhesion promoter. Take your time and work it. Apply heat to an area then smooth it out with a squeegee. The dash pieces are not an issue. BTW I do not have this anymore. I just put in leather which I am about to make a thread on. Make sure to remove all glue before applying vinyl or bumps will show.

Heating vinyl wrap is a MUST. Keep practicing man. Search some youtube videos regarding professional installation of vinyl wrap. It should help you a bit.

Di-Noc is an interior architectural finish. It is not suitable for automotive applications. It is not surprising you had issues.

More on the wrap in our vendor thread here

Black and White are available.

You said you are using Di-Noc. As I said Di-Noc is an interior architectural finish. Great for your office door or elevator door, but a poor choice for an automotive application.

Our material was designed at the outset as an automotive wrap material. As with most application, initial prep and surface cleaning is an important first step. The material is warmed, stretched and pressed into place, then heating to lock the material down. We have a DIY on Camaro5 showing the application on the bow ties here

This is a question for Camarosc5 and T-Cat,did you remove yor dash panels and dash pieces yourself? and if you did what kind of pia was it to remove these items?I would like to do Carbon Fiber too,but I have not decided to wrap them or have them hydrodipped.Either way,the parts need to come off.So any info you may have would be appreciated.Thanks,Tt--

I personally did not remove the dash trim peices myself this time (the shop did it), but I have removed them plenty of times before. It's very easy and they are just clips. You shouldn't have any trouble. If a shop charges you for labor on the dash trim removal, just do it yourself. What a shop will charge you is labor for removing the door panels as that's more time consuming. The vinyl will hold up well, just make sure to wrap it well, take your time, and try not to have to many folds that are visible. However, hydrodipping or paint is a much more durable over a long period of time, but these options are more expensive than vinyl wrapping.

Heres a different type of vinyl than what youre talking about, but it looks the same. This is interior cloth vinyl in carbon fiber. I did it last week.
