There are about 3 tracks I know of or have been to. I live in central Illinois, there is Joliet, Blackhawk, and Putnam park in Indiana. I have been to Joliet and Putnam Park. Both are very good tracks. What would be the interest of doing a track day if one was organized? I am guessing the cost would be approximately $200 per car.
As others have said, keep this on the track in a controlled environment and off public roads. Things happen stupid fast at these speeds and unless you have training and experience, the first time something unexpected happens, you'll be dead before you can decide how to react.
Public roads have open access and are not a controlled environment. There is no way I want to be driving at 100+ mph on a public road and all of a sudden find myself dealing with a typical motorist who doesn't understand how fast you are going.
If you have a passion for speed (as I certainly have), take a track school or two and learn how to drive your car safely at track speeds. There is no greater thrill for me when it comes to driving my car, than participating in a lapping day on a world-class course. Lapping is not racing. It's about having fun by wringing out your car, learning its limits and your own as well. You just can't learn these limits on the street. I try and do this 3 or 4 times a season and it sure doesn't take long to become addicted to this rush which can't even be approached by driving on a public road.
Cost for me is $250-$300 for a day on the track at Mosport. I typically will put between 110-115 track mi. on the car during one of these days, which equates to 4 or 5 sessions on the track, with each session lasting approx. 20 or 25 min. Other costs include gas (about 1.5 tanks of 94 octane), oil change & filter before and after the event plus 1-2 liters of oil used during the day. Consider normal wear and tear on tires and brakes. The more experience you have, the smoother you are, which means less wear on these items!
You want speed? On a good day I'll hit 225-230 km/hr (around 140 mph) going up the Andretti straight.
I've been doing this since 1999, starting 8 months after I got my SS. Take small steps and discipline yourself to learn the limits and not to exceed them. It's a great challenge and the most fun you can have with your clothes on!

Best regardSS,

Elie

Yes it will always be very dangerous to "break" at high speeds. If I'm going high speeds I'd prefer to "brake."

Right..because Chevrolet and Motortrend are known for lying?

Chevy is currently recording 0-to-60-mph sprints of about 6.1 sec or so, but the goal is to break the six-second barrier. Give us a car, guys. We'll get you the 5.9-sec run you're after. Top speed, by the way, is an electronically limited 155 mph. Yes, with the V-6.

I'm not saying they're lying...but maybe they're misinformed. How many times have you read an article knowing full well that what they say is totally wrong?

Most magazines are wrong most of the time when it comes to cars that aren't on lots yet. At the same time, I strongly believe that GM produced a ridiculously fast V6. I believe these numbers.

I wouldn't say most magazines are wrong most of the time in regards to non-production ready cars. In fact, I think they have much more right than wrong.

The car is a 300 horsepower car. I don't see why it can't do 155mph. Also, it's obvious they got their figures direct from a GM representative.

I'll give you this: it probably takes a little while to get to 155.

The experience of our site is that they are getting their Camaro information from a variety of sources, many of which are rumors. Other companies may be willing to give more data to these magazines, but GM is pretty tight-lipped about new cars. With all the buzz about the Camaro, they keep producing the same information with some facts and some serious mistakes.

You'll give me?

Yeah...it might take awhile to get to 155. Here nor there, it's a smokin fast 300hp V6. To me, that is awesome.

Just to clear things up...
I am in no way saying anything bad about the Camaro or its performance. My beef is with the fact that magazines tend to print things as "fact" when they have no proof. I would love it if the V6 was capable of 155, hell even 145...this car is going to be killer and I can't wait to see them on the road!

So, ....... basically what they're saying ... is that the 300hp V6 Camaro still will will not be able to outrun my Cobalt??? Don't ask me how I know ... but if it tops out completely at 155, the Cobalt will be dead even with it. Now, off the line is a different story, but tops, they'd be neck and neck...

Flame away

Cops in military towns have no tolerance for military solders. There is a lot of crap that they put up with from DUI, drugs, 5 finger discounts, rape ext. because you are in the military you are profiled whether you like it or not.

I would have told the cop. Look I was talking on my phone and last I check it was illegal to drive wile talking on the phone unless you have a hands free device. i just did not want to break any laws and get a ticket. So for you to assume that i was drinking and trying to sober up makes you look like an ass. If you thought I was under the influence you could have just came over and asked me while I was parked instead of pulling me over to find out if I was under the influence. Either way the result would be the same. being under the influence in the car with keys in hand or in the ignition Carry's the same penalty as if i was driving. So maybe you need to try to be a little more observant and up on your job instead of waisting every ones time and making your self look like a fool.

ya, i didn't notice them until i hung up, and just waited for them to put on their lights as i started my car and drove away (they parked 20 yards infront of me w/ their lights on!)

but i found its easier if i act nice to their questions so no harm no foul i drove home after their interference.
