Look at the gunk in my catchcan

I got my oil changed today. I expected there to be oil in my catchcan & from another thread, expected it to look cloudy, but this stuff was really thick, grimy, and had gritty extra thick residue on the bottom. Pics don't show how truly gross it was, but I can tell you I am REALLY glad that mess is not in my engine!

it's normal (well normal ish). It's when you get water condensation inside the catch can which mixes with the oil. No worries.

How did you take a picture with one hand holding the can and the other showing the gunk?

This is why oil comes out every 3k regardless of what GM and Mobil Claim!

I like how simple it is to clean out your can.

If you did not install one then you don't have one. They are not a OEM part. Do a search on catch can you can find everything there is to know about them.

If you ever blow a head gasket, that's what your engine oil will look like after the water mixes with it. Shortly after that, your engine will be toast.....

Glad this is in the catch can and NOT in the engine, and to Bill2129...EXACTLY!!! I don't care what type of oil is used, it will pick up condensation and it will distribute it throughout the engine causing internal rust and eventual engine failure. The lesson here is to change your oil at regular intervals. It's cheap compared to a new engine!!

That is the "milk" you get when you mix oil and water. It's not what it would look like in your very heated engine oil. In other words, if you didn't have the catch can, it's not like that gunk is what you'd find in your engine (unless you have a blown head gasket or cracked head). The oil mist is collecting in the can (which would get burnt as part of the intake charge) and then condensation settles in the can and in the oil causing that milky gross appearance. If you didn't have the can, some would settle inside the intake system, so I imagine the can helps prevent that. Clever idea. Though I'm wondering what is the "grit" you are referring to?

Volvo's have something called a "Flame Trap" which included a condensation box. Really nasty stuff would condense and crystalize in there. Same side effect function as the catch can.
