Cold Air Induction - Cal legal?

So I found a K&N 63-3074 Performance Intake Kit for $250, thinking about buying it... but it says its not California legal. Does this mean i would have to take it out every time I have to smog?

-For my 2010 SS

NONE of the CAI's are CA legal. Good thing it only takes 15min to swap it out.

Non are, due to the carbon trap in the lid of the stock unit. Just take it off when the time comes.

Exactly. Toss one on and enjoy it until you have your inspection. Swap it out when needed!

Contact K&N and ask if they've submitted their intake to CARB. I have AirAid, it's not CARB certified, but they've submitted all the paperwork. And hopefully it'll be approved before I have to SMOG in 2016. All I'll have to do then is send AirAid a pic of it installed. Then they'll send me the CA CARB APPROVED sticker to place on the tube. K&N's a good company and I'm sure they've already submitted.

You might want to google what it would take to get CARB cert for a CAI on the 2010+ Camaro. As was posted earlier, the OEM box has a carbon trap in the box. If your Airraid or K&N doesn't have this trap, it WON'T get CARB cert. Plain and simple. Seeing that the Airraid seals against the hood and the K&N is just a 2 sided heat shield, there's no way either of them will get the certification in their current form. If either company is to get CARB, they'll have to redesign their CAI, in which case you'll be SOL unless you buy another one.

Update:

Email to k&n:

Hello,

I have just purchased the K&N 63-3074 Performance Intake Kit, for my 2010 Camaro SS (LS3) and I was wondering if you've submitted your intake to CARB to make it CA legal.

Thanks, Daniel

Responce:

Hello Daniel,

Thank you for contacting K&N and inquiring about our products. Yes all of our kits are sent to CARB right before they are released to the public. The CARB is roughly 3-4 years behind, so your 2010 kit should be certified around 2013-2014. Please let me know if you have any other questions?

Actually some tests have showed the stock air box with a tune is almost as equal toots intakes. And he wouldn't have to take it off to pass test.

Looks good Daniel, let's just hope and pray some of these things start getting approved by Ca Air Resource Board!
